Coleman Send Packing By UFC

Not too long ago, Mark Coleman headlined UFC 109 facing Randy Couture. Several days later, he's apparently no longer good enough to remain in the UFC at all. On Wednesday, following a lopsided loss to Couture the UFC released Coleman from his contract and cut the veteran heavyweight. Coleman is now free to sign with any other promotion, but at 46 years of age his most likely-and most advisable-course of action is retirement. Fighters seldom do the 'most advisable' thing, however, and his actual plans are unknown at the moment.

Coleman became the first UFC fighter to be cut immediately after headlining a PPV event. Others have left due to drug test failures or for other opportunities, but none have ever been cut from their contract. Sources close to the UFC suggest that it was a decision no one wanted to make, but that all felt was unavoidable due to Coleman's age and deteriorating skills. On the other hand, its interesting that the UFC sees fit to keep any number of other aging fighters with deteriorating skills on the payroll but not a Hall of Famer in Coleman.

While the fact that Coleman is a shell of the fighter he was at his prime, the UFC's suggestion that they have his best interest at heart is somewhat duplicitous. He was kept around and booked into last Saturday's fight--a fight that no one particularly had any interest in seeing in the first place--simply because he was a fighter that Randy Couture could beat. Were the UFC interested in the well being of their aging fighters there's several others on the roster that should also be cut for the same justification as Coleman. Couture, Tito Ortiz and Chuck Liddell are all well past their prime but they're still under contract and will all likely fight again. No one wants to *see* an endless parade of old timers into the octagon, but the UFC seems determined to shove their version of the 'senior's tour' down the throats of the MMA fanbase.

Coleman's age has never been a secret and his diminished skill level was evident to anyone who has watched his recent fights. If the UFC was really interested in his physical well being, the main event against Couture should have never taken place. The fight itself wasn't exactly one that UFC fans had been clamoring for and one that met with derision from the MMA media from the time it was announced. The fact that the PPV buyrate for the event will end up as one of the lowest in recent history pretty much sums up the story.

While retirement would be in Coleman's best interest, he may attempt to fight in a smaller US promotion or in Japan where he's well known from his time in PRIDE. He's already a member of the UFC Hall of Fame with a 26-10 career record and has fought the best in the world including Fedor Emelianenko, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Mirko Cro Cop.

Needless to say, the company is divided on whether or not this is actually worth all the trouble to find Ryan, let alone watch him get a ticket home.

You get to know each and every one of the men in the company through various conversations that they have about their lives before the war, and their plans for when the war is finally over. When they reach Ryan and deliver the news, he still insists he remains at his post long enough to hold a key bridge in Allied control. He refuses to leave the company that he is with until he knows this key bridge is secure and not able to be used by the Germans.

This is a story that heavily reflects on the tragedy of war, the necessity of war, and the value of human life in the face of many different circumstances. This could likely be among the best war movies of all time, if not just included in some of the best movies of all time in general. Powerful performances by Tom Hanks (Captain Miller), Tom Sizemore (Sgt. Mike Horvath), and Matt Damon (Private Ryan) amongst so many others have helped to make this movie as impressive as it was.

While there are many creatures in and around the city of Melbourne it is rare to see creatures while eating a burger and fries at McDonald's but that is an experience that several people had this past week at the local fast food restaurant. Two men decided to provide some creature entertainment and pulled out a five foot python named Boris in the parking lot and began wrestling him.

Needless to say that visitors to the restaurant were a little shocked by what had been displayed to the point where they notified authorities who quickly arrived on the scene and arrested the two men aged 22 and 24. After arresting the two men, police realized that the python had been stolen from a pet store one day earlier.

Apparently, they believe the men also stole a lizard in the robbery at Totally Reptiles Pet Store, but the lizard has not yet been recovered. And while the owner is still concerned about the lizard she is relieved about Boris' safe return. The black-headed python was a bit cold but appears to be unharmed and is recovering well from back to the pet.

Black headed pythons like Boris are native to Northern Australia and are not venomous; fortunately they only bite when they are hunting their prey. The men who stole him and the restaurant goers were never at any real risk of the large python although at 5 feet long he is very intimidating looking. Charges have been filed against the two men that include burglary and theft but sources have not released the name of these two men at this point.

This bizarre display is not commonplace in Melbourne but just a case of Dumb vs. Dumber as media sources are calling it. It was inevitable that technological increases will clash with the rules of the traditional classroom, and no example is more pertinent than whether cell phones should be permitted in schools. Without historical precedent to determine a course or action, the only recourse is to weigh the pros and cons against each other and logically determine a reasonable conclusion.

A damning consideration against cell phone use in schools is the fact that, with smart phones, students can cheat during tests. It's not hard to access Wikipedia or text message someone in the class for assistance. However, there is really nothing new here, even if the medium is different. It's not really harder to glance at a screen than it is a well prepared cheat note. Besides, it's easy for teachers to collect cell phones on test days, and vigilantly keeping guard against cheating is something teachers have to do anyway.

The strongest and most obvious case against cell phone possession in class is their distracting nature. Even if the ringer is turned off (something students frequently forget to do), text messaging is so ubiquitous and subtle that it's hard for teachers to control. But teachers have contended against inventive distractions for decades, and even if smart phones are more advanced than passing notes it isn't fundamentally very different. From the students perspective, they're motivated by the same urge.

On the positive side, every school has a lockdown procedure in the event of an emergency. While it's true that varying messages can cause confusion and worry amongst parents and outsiders concern for students, the ability to contact police immediately outweighs this concern. In the tragic event of a school shooting, warnings can be sent from classroom to classroom and a line can be established warning police. Yes, it's possible for students to give false alarms and mischievously cause delay in the classrooms, but the real possibility of saving lives must be given more prominence than the disadvantages of student nuisance (something they don't need cell phones to cause anyway).

Cell phones have provided benefits that a couple decades ago would have been considered unimaginable to attain on a wide scale. For years, schools were looking for ways to fund computers in the classroom and people protested the gap between the public and private schools' ability to do this. Even in inner city schools, it's not uncommon to have a student in each classroom with the ability to use the internet as a resource on behalf of the class. Even where this isn't the case, smart phones are going to get cheaper and cheaper.

Cell phones have the ability to amplify historic problems of distraction, nuisance, and cheating. These problems create the need for modified solutions for the old problems. But the positive aspects they can deliver are new and groundbreaking. It would be a shame to allow fear and reservation to prevent us from enjoying such obvious benefits. We need visionaries uninhibited by reactionary attachments to tradition to guide policy concerning the implementation of technical advances in the classroom.

In any case, the animal will benefit both from the mental exercise required and from the time and attention you give him. The most satisfying form of pet training uses positive reinforcement.

Animals are naturally keen to perform actions that they know will lead to positive outcomes. Positive reinforcement means rewarding your pet for good behavior, rather than punishing him for bad behavior. The rewards most commonly used in training are enthusiastic praise and a tasty morsel of food.

Although you may not be aware of it, you have probably already trained your pet using positive reinforcement. If your dog or cat stands near a door and barks or meows, and you open the door for them, they will associate their actions with the reward of being let in or out. The next time they want you to open the door, they will repeat the same behavior in anticipation of getting the same reward.

Before beginning a formal training session, you will need to determine the precise action you want your pet to perform and think of a command or cue word which will initiate the action. Single syllable cue words such as 'come' or 'stay' are easiest for the animal to recognize and for you to remember.

When your pet performs the desired action in response to the command, immediately reward him with verbal praise, swiftly followed by a treat. Consistency and speed are vitally important. If you are trying to teach a dog to respond to the word 'sit', and you wait until he is standing again before rewarding him, he won't know which action to associate with the positive response.

To teach an animal to get off the bed or sofa, chose a simple command like 'off'. When you find your pet sitting on the furniture, get a food treat and hide it in your hand. Stand over the animal, loudly and clearly say 'off' and gently push her to the floor. Immediately praise her and hold the treat to her mouth. Do this every time you catch her sitting where she's not allowed. Eventually, she will jump off the furniture in response to your command, without the accompanying push.

Once an animal has learned to perform the required action in response to the cue word, gradually stop giving the treat reward, but continue to let her know you are pleased. Dogs respond well to verbal praise and physical affection such as a scratch on the ear. After training, this is usually all the reward they require. Some cats and birds also crave their owner's affection and can be taught to perform on command without a food reward.

Pet training requires a degree of patience and some sessions will go more smoothly than others. When an animal is excited, distracted or tired, he may not perform at his best. Avoid the temptation to chastise your pet if he refuses to cooperate. It could lead him to associate the action you are trying to teach with negative consequences. If you are looking into an article such as this one, than I can venture a guess that you are wanting to learn a little more about one of the most horrifying science fiction pieces of cinema in the world today, "Alien". This was by no means the first extraterrestrial based film to be released, so people were fairly familiar with what they thought an alien should look like on screen. However, this movie gave audiences an outer worldly being unlike anything that they had ever seen before. The first thing that you would likely notice as a considerable difference between these creatures and those that you might have seen before would be the fact that they aren't just "stand around and look eerie" beings. These are very aggressive and very deadly creatures, that have absolutely no interest in making patterns in corn fields or beaming you up into their spaceship.

They were creatures that fed on fear as much as they fed on the lives of humans. They walked on all fours and they stalked and hunted their prey, which in this case was a group of unknowing space miners. They had several sets of teeth, and they salivated a substance that could eat through metal floors with ease. While you don't learn it in the original release, but in the sequels, most of them report to a much larger and much more terrifying queen.

It is this crew that the story centers around. They are on a mining expedition to take minerals back to Earth when they are hailed from a nearby planet with a distress signal. But it doesn't take the crew members Dallas and Kane long to learn that they are not in the midst of anything friendly when they stumble upon a nest of eggs. One hatches and a little alien leaps out and attaches to Kane's face and refuses to release the hold.

Through the course of the plot the creatures that the little one will grow to become begin to surface and wreak havoc. The crew also learns that they were meant to land on the planet and the ship would house aliens being sent back to Earth, and they would likely be the in flight meal for this excursion. The crew is all but demolished, except for Ripley who escapes on a shuttle after setting the self destruct functions. She is not alone, and the alien is outside the shuttle attempting to find a way inside. When she tries to come in through the thrusters, Ripley fires them which incinerates the creature and Ripley returns safely to Earth.

This film would likely not have been as good without the performances that brought the film to life. The most noteworthy of these being from Sigourney Weaver (Ripley) and the supporting roles of Tom Skerritt (Dallas) and John Hurt (Kane).

So if you cared to learn a little more about the "Alien" franchise, this should have been a help to that end. There is a lot to know, but if you haven't seen the film you should start there, and then you might consider renting the sequels just so that you are completely up to speed.

The Chiefs gave Todd Haley his first win as a NFL head coach on Sunday with a---6 win over the Washington Redskins. Kansas City won despite not scoring a touchdown, compiling their-- points via 4 Ryan Succop field goals and a game ending safety. Kansas City is now 1-5 on the NFL season, while the Redskins slumped to 2-4.
