Great Lakes And Global Warming: A Recipe For Regional Reshaping

By Adriana Noton

A century worth of human innovation including the industrial revolution can wreck havoc to any environment that it comes into contact with. With leaps in scientific measurement we can now look at the world in completely new ways and a side effect of that is being able to look into the future with some certainty. Climate change is a hot topic along with its effects. The Great Lakes and global warming is a situation that will significantly change an entire region.

Already dealing with the onslaught of invasive species, global warming will only add additional pressure to the Great Lakes region. These vast reservoirs of fresh water account for twenty percent of the total amount of fresh water on the planet, a resource that will become scarcer in the future.

Being a huge reservoir for fresh water cannot be downplayed in its importance, but there are other things that the region provides. It is a main player in the waterway shipping, as well as a provider of hydroelectric energy to many surrounding areas. Many tourists flock to its shores, which are also a treasure trove of plant and animal species.

All is not right in the great lakes region, however, as it has been subject to urban development over the past hundred years. This construction and urbanization has led to air and water pollution as well as habitat destruction due to the building up of cities along its shores. All of these issues make something as simple as increased temperatures potentially devastating.

At this point there is still a thin layer of ice that builds up along the lakes at certain times of the year, but with increased temperature the ice will disappear. When the ice leaves, the lakes will evaporate at a higher rate and bring down the water levels.

As recently as last year, the lake level of Lake Superior was at its lowest in seventy seven years and predictions for the future are estimating another three foot decrease. The effects of low water levels include restrictions to shipping and a concentration of pollutants which will damage the water quality greatly, as well as the industry for travel, leisure, and cruises.

Acting now to restore the Great Lakes region is imperative and already building steam in terms of enacting policy. The reality, however, is that the project will cost billions of dollars and last dozens of years. Antique sewage systems will need to be completely replaced and already polluted sediment will have to be cleaned. Wetland areas will need to be bulked up and restored so as to act as a natural barrier against invasive species.

Another issue outside of a lower water level includes more droughts and storms which will create a cycle that could result in increased pollution runoff, virus transmission, as well as oxygen free dead zones within the lake due to the growth of algae.

By the end of this current century it is believed that the temperature of the great lakes region will increase by two to four degrees, with precipitation increasing by 25%. Lake levels are predicted to fall anywhere from 1.5 to 8 feet.

Making a better tomorrow really does mean being better today. Allowing for proactive measure while being realistic about future effects can mean that humans can restore luster to the Great Lakes region.

You Can Enjoy Log Furniture Without Owning A Cabin

By Jennifer Sanders

It was a very special time in American history when settlers from all nations came in droves to settle in this vast and great country. They brought what they could with them from other lands, but often it was nothing but some clothes and a few family treasures if they were lucky enough to have any. A home and furnishings for that home had to be acquired when they got here. The most common way to get a cabin and furniture was to build it from the beautiful tree laden forests that were all around them.

When you are out in the middle of the wilds as many settlers were, they took almost everything they needed from the land. If they wanted a table, they had to build one. If they wanted a bed off of the floor, that built that too. Eventually they would have an entire house of furnishings made from what ever species of trees most common around them. Log furniture became more and more finely hand crafted as time went by and more people learned to build it.

Settlers used the trees that surrounded to make their furniture. They usually chose softer wood that was more easily to manipulate like birch, white or red cedar, hickory and pine. They would use harder woods like oak as well. Rustic log furniture can still be purchased today from those that handcraft it or it can be purchased factory made depending on preference. People today use log furniture to outfit their cabins, lodges or log homes. It is as beautifully made as ever and even sturdier and longer lasting than the settlers made it.

If buying rustic log furniture interests you at all, you can find a vast selection available on the Internet. There is bedroom furniture with any of the traditional pieces you might want like dressers, beds or chest of drawers. There are sofas and chairs made from wood and leather. You can even add more of a pioneer feel with rustic lighting constructed from various mets, antlers and other natural elements. If you want rustic outdoor furniture, they have that available too.

It is not necessary that you own a log home or cabin in order to use log furniture. You can use it to create a rustic family room or perhaps just one bedroom in your house. You can use rustic outdoor furniture to decorate your deck or patio. There are so many different styles of log furniture, you are likely to find some that you will fall in love with.

A Short Overview Of The Drew Carey Show

By Leola Cruz

Seinfeld gets a lot of attention, as it well should, as having been one of the most innovative sitcoms of the nineties. However, The Drew Carey Show really made just as many important innovations in the television show format as Seinfeld, even if people mainly remember it as one of those shows you watch when there was nothing else on. Put it on your list next time you visit your movie download service and see what the show was really all about.

The show could have been just one more formulaic sitcom to throw on the pile. Carey could have played a football dad with a football widow wife, two kids, and a wacky neighbor, but instead, he chose to make the film about a single guy, overweight, with a dead end job and who is just unsatisfied with where his life is at this point.

Like Seinfeld, the show abandoned the idea of formulaic plots to take things in its own direction, focusing on a man who is always on the verge of a mid-life crisis and who experiences real existential dread at his situation in life, what it all means and whether or not he'd be happier if he'd just leap off a bridge and end it all already.

Like Seinfeld, the show never really delved into the same formulaic plots about Superbowl parties and so on, and really went in a whole new direction creating its own, new concepts for great TV stories. It's about the existential dread, the fear you feel when you're anywhere between thirty and fifty and wondering why your life didn't shape up the way you wanted it to. It's really interesting, and a little deeper than the usual Football Widow jokes you see in most sitcoms.

By the final season, Carey was making somewhere around a million bones an episode, but... The ratings started to slip. Drew Carey had a strong and loyal following, but it just wasn't enough to keep the show on the air any longer. Sadly, the show is not syndicated anywhere in the US right now, nor have they ever released anything beyond the first season on DVD, so watching online is probably the only way to enjoy it anymore.

The show was really refreshing in the way that it did not focus on the same tired issues as every other show out there at the time. It wasn't the same old "Uh oh it's football season" jokes, it wasn't the son borrowing the car without asking, it was something a lot more interesting and less predictable, and this was really the rejuvenation the sitcom format needed, alongside Seinfeld, after decades of the same old stuff day in day out.

The show also feels refreshing in that it acknowledges that mom, dad and the kids are not, in fact, the only form a family can take, nor are mom, dad and the kids the only people in the US who matter. The show is, again, focused on single people, and the result is a show that really validates you no matter who you are in life and what you've accomplished so far.

And of course, it's funny. Lewis and Oswald may well be the second and third funniest comic relief characters of the nineties, after Cosmo Kramer, of course. It's always fun when a show that's already a comedy features comic relief characters. Fourth place, of course, goes to Zoidberg, of Futurama.

Winter Camping Tips

By Wayne Torres

Adventurous snowmobilers often add an extra measure of excitement to their snowmobiling vacations " camping.

During cold nights, sleeping in a tent for a few nights can be a rigorous task with the risks of frostbite or hypothermia to contend with.

It is cold enough to endure the frigid temperatures that go along with snowmobiling during the daytime hours, but the evening hours provide another level of frigidity and cold weather without the warmth of the sun to balance out the cold.

However, camping during the winter can still be an enjoyable experience as long as the campers take some necessary precautions.

Don't get caught up in all the excitement of a winter excursion too early as there is plenty of planning that is necessary.

Top priority in your list of things to do should be to fully research the area(s) you plan to visit. Make sure to understand the conditions of the winter season in the region so you can equip yourself appropriately.

Knowing the average amount of snow, routes that you plan to take, and the experience of the group that you are going to travel with are important factors in planning your winter camping trip.

If you plan to camp overnight in a winter camping excursion, you need to be able to make the necessary preparations for your entire group including any small children with minimal experience that may make the trip with you.

Overnight camping, especially during the winter seasons, can cause your body to lose heat at exponential rates. This can be a great danger if the proper precautions are not taken care of during the planning stages.

Thermal clothing is a must when you snowmobile during the days and afternoons and they play a very important role when you plan to camp in cold weather as well.

It is also important to use the layering method. The idea behind this method is to wear several loose layers of clothing, each layer providing more insulation for the body.

The best part of the layering method is that it allows you to easily shed a layer or two if your body overheats. Keeping your body dry will keep you hydrated much better than a sweaty body.

Finally, no overnight camping trip would be complete without an ample amount of food for everybody in the group. A popular treat among campers is smores, but campers should also include foods that provide a better degree of nourishment.

You need to eat to stay nourished during the day so bring rather appealing foods as well as nutritional since appetites tend to die down when we are cold.

Oatmeal, granola, cheese, and other dry foods which are rich in vitamins and minerals is a must for winter camper.

The enjoyment of a snowmobiling and winter camping experience rests on the campers' abilities to plan and pack properly. Do it correctly and it can be the best trip of your life; until next year, of course.

1977 Triple Crown Winner Seattle Slew

By Ross Everett

Seattle Slew, horse racing's lone remaining living Triple Crown winner, passed away on May 7, 2002 at the age of 28. Already ranked among the all time greats by virtue of this accomplishment alone, Slew is even more notable as the only Triple Crown winner to go undefeated as a three year hold. He came from humble beginnings, bought at public auction--the only Triple Crown winner to be acquired in this manner. After retiring to stud in'78 he remained a very profitable horse based on a stud fee of $300,000. His offspring earned over $76 million dollars at the race track and include over 100 stakes race winners including'84 Kentucky Derby champion Swale.

The Seattle Slew story began very modestly at a public auction in Lexington, Kentucky. The Keeneland Summer Yearling sale wasn't supposed to be the marketplace of champions, and the idea that this particular horse would ever amount to anything other than a farmhand was downright laughable. Slew looked clumsy, due primarily to a right forefoot that splayed outward and resulting in a shuffling gait at a trot. He also wasn't a majestic beast like his predecessor by a few years, Secretariat. Slew was borderline ugly. So ungainly a creature was he that he was given the less than inspiring nickname "Baby Huey" by the Keeneland staff. He was purchased by two couples (Karen and Mickey Taylor and Jim and Sally Hill) for $17,500. What wasn't apparent at the yearling sale was the intangibles that make up a championship thoroughbred--poise under pressure, love of competition, toughness, heart and desire. The Taylor's and Hill's had stumbled onto an equine Tiger Woods or Michael Jordan who's competitive fire quickly became apparent to the trainers that worked with him and the jockeys that rode him. His first race came at Belmont in'76, and the three races he entered--and won--as a 2 year old gave a hint of what was to come.

Slew became the Kentucky Derby favorite by winning his three prep races as a three year old, including prestigious Wood Memorial. In the Derby, Slew got off to a terrible start as he stumbled from the gate much like War Emblem did in the 2002 Belmont. Unlike 2002's Triple Crown contender, however, Slew was able to recover from that miscue and basically force his way through a pack of other horses to position himself at the front of the field at the quarter mile pole. Slew would win the Derby by a length and 3 quarters. He took another tough victory at the Preakness before clinching the Triple Crown with a 4 length victory in the Belmont Stakes.

Slew ran in a few races as a 4 year old but in the pre-Breeders' Cup days there wasn't as many opportunities for an older horse. He retired to stud in'78. We've already discussed his prowess in the breeding shed, siring a number of first rate horses such as the aforementioned Swale, and the'92 Belmont champ AP Indy. Slew stood at Three Chimneys Farm in Midway, Kentucky from'85 until early 2002 when he was moved to Hill 'n' Dale Farm in Lexington, KY following a spinal operation.

Slew was in someways overshadowed during his prime by his predecessor--and arguably the greatest thoroughbred race horse in history--1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat. In hindsight, however, it has finally been noted what an exceptional horse he really was. Jockey Angel Cordero, who rode Slew during the twilight of his career noted "If I had a chance to take any horse in the world, if someone said your life is depending on riding one horse to win, I would take (Slew). I rode 44,000 horses, but he was special, he was different. He was muscled, like a wrestler. He ran different than any other horse. It was like he came from another planet."

Following his death in 2002, Slew was laid to rest at Hill 'n' Dale Farm in Kentucky under a statue memorializing his legacy.

Movie Download Sites - Quality Viewing

By Ruby Oneill

With today's economy being how it is, it is hard to find a movie rental store that is still in business without having to drive all over town. Dollar a day rental boxes have become very popular, but you can not guarantee they will have a movie you want to see. Going to the movies has become ridiculously overpriced, and out of many a persons budget. And who wants to pay for a DVD you may not even want to watch again? The best alternative to the above is using Movie Download Sites.

There are now several websites that offer different methods to view movies. The free sites offer hundreds of movies. The selections might not have the latest releases but do have some excellent choices. These movie libraries are a great option for free movies.

If the plan is to watch these movies at the computer then consider the equipment. If streaming movies or downloading them then a high speed connection is needed. Processor speed is also a very important factor. With a slow processor movies will stutter and pause too often while trying to buffer the data. Downloading movies requires a lot of spare storage space. If the plan is to burn a copy to a disc then even more space will be needed. Getting an external hard drive is a good idea for storing a collection of movies without affecting system storage or performance.

Sound is often times over looked when making a home theater system. Select a system that has both surround sound and a sub woofer. There are online documents to assist in creating a home theater system. Speaker placement can be a fine art and these documents can offer suggestions to optimize the sound output.

DVD burners and blu-ray burners are both available. Streaming a movie from a site in 1080 will be about the same quality as a blu-ray disc. While blu-ray is becoming the most widely used for disc viewing, the online standard is streaming video.

Some sites require payment for downloads, but many times these sites will also give an option to burn the movie directly to a disc, saving you a step later on. With a multitude of websites offering free downloads of software, it shouldn't be too difficult before you find one that will work best for you.

Watching movies on a mobile phone is becoming a popular trend. Charges other than the service plan may apply for these movies. The movies will be formatted for the size of the particular phone specifications. The movies are normally lowered in quality to allow for faster streaming.

Movie download sites are the future of movie watching. With the right amount of money movie viewing at home can be just as good as going to a movie theater. Also make sure that the website is using legal methods to distribute movies.

Roadside Assistance Is One Of The Best Safety Investments You Can Make

By Adriana Noton

Americans love of their automobile travel in general is legendary and globally acknowledged. And so many extraordinary sights to see; the Grand Canyon, Mount Rushmore, and The Great Plains to name a few. In fact, we've been traveling since before we were even a young nation as our settlements expanded from the East Coast to the West Coast. It was difficult than, and now it would be far too hazardous a trip to make without roadside assistance.

Back in the late 1700s, the notion of travel was fueled from the very outset as the pioneers moved westward to expand the young nation across our massive continent. The draws were many and varied, from finding their own land to the call of the wild too the later advent of the gold rush in California. In those days, travel was most accomplished via wagon train or on horseback, and the going was anything but luxurious.

Travelling in the early days of this nation was fraught with danger. If the exposure, climate and difficulty finding sustenance did not get you, there was still the advent of lethal wild animals and an indigenous population that were often inhospitable. For this reason traveling was a carefully thought out and planned adventure not for the feint of heart.

The pioneers persevered, however, and despite many losses along the way, settlements were established throughout the country. Travel generally followed the designated postal routes of waterways and railways, with that mostly ending in Saint Joseph, Missouri, where further travel became truly an adventure. This explains why there are so many antique shops in that city, as the westward journey found unprepared settlers having to part with many of their belongings at the end of the railway system. They just could not get everything in a wagon.

The years from 1863 to 1869 saw a Herculean effort come to fruition as a railway line was completed traversing the nation. Fifty years later our first highway would cross from New York to California and the US was connected, albeit in a rudimentary fashion. Thus began the American love for driving.

The Lincoln Highway served as inspiration for the drafting of the National Interstate and Defense Act of 1956 which provided for the construction of the interstate highway system. Formally entitled the Dwight D. Eisenhower National System of Interstate and Defense Highways, this system served two purposes. It encouraged and facilitated interstate tourism and business, and it provided the means to move the massive military machine should the US every come under attack. President Eisenhower had been impressed by the German roadway system while he served as the Supreme Allied Commander in Europe during World War II.

This notion of assisting with the national defense is the answer to a number of trivialities about the roadway. The answer to why there is an interstate in Hawaii and Alaska is answered by the connectivity between military bases in these two states, as the original bill authorizing its construction was also a national defense endeavor. Also one mile out of every five miles is straight, allowing it to be used as an emergency landing field if it is necessary (more prominent with CAA insurance).

Travel across the united States in the form of a road trip has been immortalized in movies and been a part of most American lives. About the only downside to traveling across the nation is the time it takes and the possibility of having your car malfunction or just die altogether out in the middle of nowhere. The introduction of roadside assistance has all but taken these risks out of the equation.

To Go On A Camping Holiday Or Not

By Sheila Souvannasap

Going camping can be a lot of fun. More and more people are deciding to go on camping type holidays for several reasons.

The first reason is that going on a camping holiday is a lot cheaper than going abroad. And because we all know that money's a bit tight at the moment. Going camping can be a great way to get away on a break without breaking the bank.

The second reason that camping is very becoming popular is because it means lots of fresh air and less stress than having to worry about booking plane tickets and hotels etc.

But if you don't really like the countryside and getting out there in the wild then camping is probably not the best idea for a holiday for you.

A lot of the time going camping means going without a proper wash and no shower. You'll either have to go to the toilet in the woods which no one likes to do or you'll have to use a public toilet which as we all know are usually disgusting.

On the other hand a great thing about camping is having the pleasure to sit around a fire at night under the stars watching the flames dance to and throw. Also it means you can roast some marshmallows or hazelnuts.

One thing that puts most people off camping is the creatures that they'll encounter. It's a horrible experience going into your tent at night to find some big bug or spider there waiting for you or to feel something crawling on your feet in the early hours of the morning.

This is a big enough reason to not go camping in itself.

So as you can see there's lots of good aspects to going on a camping trip. There's good points and bad points that you need to consider before you decide.

A Review Of Shame With William Shatner

By Trisha Murray

Shame, a film by Roger Corman, is really a startling piece of cinema. Corman is well known as a schlock-meister. It was a strong business model, he would hand some young director a small budget and have them create a cheap, marketable B movie. This was how he paid the bills, but, beyond the B horror and exploitation movies, he was also a truly skilled filmmaker, and more than a few movies beyond on your queue the next time you sign into your movie download service.

The film is shockingly courageous when you take the context into consideration. Shame is about racial relations and tensions in small southern towns. Now, when people were making movies like this in the eighties and nineties, decades after the success of the civil rights movement, that's one thing. Corman took a crew down to a real small southern town during the civil rights era and actually filmed on location, where he and his team were constantly subjected to harassment and threats from the local populace.

William Shatner turns in one of his finest performances as the charming villain, a political agent who has arrived in town for one purpose only: To incite racially motivated violence so as to sway the vote in favor of his segregationist employers. He enjoys doing this, and he uses his boyish good looks and innocent charm to deliver a villainous performance that really crawls under your skin.

The idea of casting Shatner as a vile, disgusting villain may have been inspired by the charisma of Adolf Hitler: You need a charming man to sell evil ideas.

Corman and his crew were run out of town by the local police when it became clear what sort of a film they were creating, and that it could mean trouble for segregationists. The final shots were literally filmed "on the run". As in, Corman was filming at one end of the street while a virtual lynch mob was closing in from the opposite end of the street, so Corman had to grab the shots and flee.

At this year's Oscars, the lifetime achievement award goes to Roger Corman, and there has been remarkably little coverage of his life and his work. It's too bad, because few filmmakers have contributed so much to the world of cinema for so little thanks.

It's true that Corman is primarily remembered as the maker of some truly cheap B films, but that's only one aspect of what he's done for American film. Besides making some true classics like Shame, he also launched the careers of Dennis Hopper, Martin Scorsese and Jack Nicholson, to name only a few of his many efforts and gifts to the modern cinematic landscape.

If you've never bothered with Corman, start with Shame, then watch X: The Man With The X-Ray Eyes. These are two of his best, and Shame in particular is an example of what the artist is truly capable of when he's willing to take a break from his more marketable B movies and really put his heart into a film that takes courage to write, direct and release.

The Goonies Reviewed

By Carly Cannon

If you remember the eighties, then you certainly remember The Goonies. This movie was a classic. On the other hand, if you still haven't seen it for some crazy reason... Think Pirates of the Caribbean meets Stand By Me meets Indiana Jones meets The Sopranos meets... Well, it's a whole lot of different movies all wrapped into one, really. It's primarily an adventure flick, but it makes a lot of stops along the way, and stands as one of the all time classic kids movie downloads.

The movie focuses on Mikey Walsh and his band of "Goonies", kids from the docks area of Astoria, Oregon. The kids are sort of the outcasts, the rejects, the ne'er do wells of the town, who have a long on-going rivalry with the rich kids. This rivalry comes to a head when the local rich guys plan to foreclose on the neighborhood and turn it into a golf course.

So, the Goonies have to go get some buried treasure to save their neighborhood. They find a treasure map in dad's attic, they go to a restaurant on the edge of town where it turns out there are some Italian gangsters known as the Fratellis hiding out, and keeping their little brother, Sloth, a gigantic, deformed monster with a heart of gold chained up to a chair watching black and white TV all day. So the kids have to somehow get into the caves under the restaurant and find the treasure without getting the Fratellis' attention and...

It sounds like a lot of information to take in all at once: Pirates, the mafia, buried treasure, foreclosures... But if you just stay along for the ride, you don't have to worry about keeping track of all that. Just enjoy it for what it is, a fast paced, action filled adventure romp through caves and crypts, culminating in a showdown on an underground pirate ship.

Really, the movie's all about fun. It's a really silly, fun, exciting movie, partly because it doesn't go all the way into fantasy territory. Unlike Monster Squad, everything that happens in The Goonies technically COULD happen in real life... It's not very likely, but within the context of the film, it feels about as real as anything in Stand by Me. This really helps it inspire you with a sense of adventure in your every day life.

The film was thought to be incredibly fast paced, a little too break-neck, when it was released, but times have changed. Today, you won't get out of a kid's movie without seeing seven manic chase scenes, and at least one character getting dragged along an assembly line conveyor belt. The Goonies is relatively laid back in comparison to the madcap CGI films out today.

But in any event, it's one of the all time great eighties flicks, as it well should be, having been produced by Spielberg and directed by Richard Donner. The style, the fashion, the music, it all adds up to a movie that couldn't have been made in any other decade.

It really is a classic in its own right, sort of the family film answer to Indiana Jones. If you remember it from your own childhood, now may be the time to turn your own children on to the adventures of Mikey Walsh and the rest of the Goon Squad.

How To Install Water Filters In Your Kitchen

By Robert Short

Water collects impurities as it moves from the catchment area through pipes to our homes. Installing water filters is not difficult and will give you clean, clear water for drinking and cooking.

There are many different units that can be installed under the sink in your kitchen. The units hold cartridges that filter contaminants from your water. There are different levels of filtration with different cartridges so you need to select the cartridge that is right for you. This will depend on the type of water supply in your location.

The filtration unit needs to be placed in the cupboard under the sink. It needs to be out of the way so it doesn't interfere with access to the pipes. But, also accessible enough that changing the filter regularly does not become a chore. Position the apparatus where you want to install it and use the holes in the mounts to pencil marks on the wall where the screws will go.

Gather some basic tools so you will have what you need to install the filter unit. An adjustable wrench or wrench of a size that matches your plumbing fittings will be needed. This will be used to undo plumbing fittings and do them up again when the filtration unit has been attached. A drill and screwdriver are all that are needed to mount the unit under the sink.

Drill the holes in the wall where you have marked it using the correct size drill bit for the screws. Different models of filtration systems will have different numbers of screws to attach them but they will all provide the screws needed. Hold the unit in place and attach the screws to the wall. Check that it is mounted solidly.

Turn your water off using the cut off lever under the sink or, if you don't have one of those, at the meter. If you forget to turn it off you will create a flood in your kitchen when you undo the fittings. When the water is turned off, turn the faucet on to allow any water left to drain out.

On close inspection you will find a flexible hose that connects the water supply with the pipes under your sink. This hose needs to be disconnected from the pipe and reconnected via the inlet of your water filtration unit. Place some paper towels under the hose before you disconnect it to absorb any remaining water in the line. A similar hose leads from the outlet of the unit and you connect this to the pipe under your sink.

Turn the water back on and check for leaks. If there are leaks turn the water off again and tighten the fittings. Turn the faucet on and let it flow until you can't see any signs of sediment and the water flowing is completely clear. This should only take a few moments. If the water does not flow from the faucet check the lines to make sure you have connected them properly.

It is important to remember to change the filter cartridges. The regularity required will be noted in the instructions that come with the unit. Water filters installed under the sink ensure you have clean and odorless drinking water in your kitchen.

A Synopsis Of The Film The Last Dragon

By Erma Duncan

The Last Dragon was a film produced by Motown Records in the mid-eighties, and while it was sort of created as a way to market a few singles, notably Oh Sheila, the film still stands as a pretty good Kung Fu movie, a good comedy, and one of the all time must download movies of the eighties. It's fun, funny, sort of corny and very eighties.

The film follows Bruce Leroy, or so is his nickname. He's a young martial artist from Harlem who works for his father's pizza parlor while teaching Kung Fu to the local neighborhood kids. Throughout his adventures, he also has to keep his cool and composure while dealing with his rival, Sho'Nuff, who's always trying to get a rise out of him. Sho'Nuff, you see, is the Shogun of Harlem... Yep, the Shogun of Harlem. That's what he likes to call himself.

Sho'Nuff is really one of the all time great screen villains. Everything about him is just... Wild, ridiculous and hilarious. He walks around with a crew of lackeys, and wherever he enters the scene, he's preceded by a little call-and-response speech between himself and his crew, as if they were the mirror on the wall, he asks them if he is the prettiest, the meanest and the baddest, and Sho Nuff, he is. He wears shoulder pads, visor sunglasses and hakama, those baggy pants worn by samurai. For style and attitude, he's really one of the funniest heavies of all time.

There's a subplot that you probably... Won't take too much interest in. See, Leroy is after the heart of this girl who produces a local music show, and there's this sleazy promoter who's trying to get his girlfriend's new single played on her show. When you see the video, you'll grimace and shudder in embarrassment just for watching it, so... It's funny, but you find yourself wishing they'd just get back to the kung fu already!

And of course, it does pay off in the end when the manager hires all the baddest dudes in the city to have it out with Bruce Leroy and his students. These "bad dudes" include a big fat old white guy with a Mister T Mohawk and an all gold one piece suit... Yep, real bad dudes, these guys.

There are also some really fun, corny moments along the way. At one point, Leroy tries to seek wisdom from the guy who writes the fortune cookies at the local Chinese restaurant, only to find that they're written by a computer. Therein he finds that zen wisdom of emptiness and being.

Could the movie have been better without the weird subplot about the record promoter? Sure, but even so, it's one of the all time classic eighties flicks, and one of the best attempts at spoofing the Kung Fu genre while at the same time honoring it. It's also just plain a whole lot of fun.

It's exciting, funny, colorful and kind of corny, and a lot of fun. Get a few beers and some buddies and give it a download. You'll definitely enjoy the show if nothing else.

The Movie Hit Exiled Reviewed

By Cecelia Rich

If you're looking for an action flick that's a little different from the usual shaky cam and incoherent running and shooting, Exiled may be the answer. It belongs on any movie downloads queue for the way that it manages to create a strange, dreamlike trance in its action through slow motion and unpredictable developments.

We follow a gangster who betrayed his boss years ago, and his since gotten married and had a baby. The boss sends a couple of hitmen to take him out, while at the same time, two other former members of the gang show up to protect him. This is where the movie begins.

The five characters are all friends, and so, after a quick, and dazzling shootout, they come to a compromise. Where most gangster movies are fairly cold and impersonal when it comes to "whacking" people, this one is oddly sweet and sentimental, and the five decide to pull off a big score to support the wife and child of the lead character before settling any other business they might have together.

This movie comes from Johnnie To, the legendary Hong Kong director who came up around the same time as John Woo and Ringo Lam, in the Heroic Bloodshed era. Where those movies were driven by anger at the Chinese takeover of Hong Kong, Exiled was made after the takeover, when it was shown that things hadn't changed quite as much as the Hong Kong people were expecting.

The film really feels like a dream, with slow motion shootouts taking several minutes while only carrying about thirty seconds of action were they to be shot in real time. One incredible sequence has a character throwing an empty drink can into the air, and the shootout takes place over several minutes as the can falls to the floor in slow motion just seconds after the final bullet is fired.

The story is fairly confusing. You have to simply watch it for the emotional drive of the characters, because the plot line is all over the place, however, this actually helps the movie's dream like quality. Even the director has said that he didn't know exactly what was going on while directing the film, and was hoping that he would figure it out in editing. When that didn't work out, he decided that, maybe someday, it'll make sense.

The genre of Heroic Bloodshed was defined by angry violence, often showing one man up against an army as a parallel to the independent people of Hong Kong and their anger against the Communist China. After Woo and Lam went to Hollywood, Johnnie To stayed behind and redefined the genre on his own terms, turning it into something a little less vitriolic.

Exiled is a rare action film, and certainly one to see if you want something a little different than the usual shaky-cam shootout flick. It's really a refreshing breath of fresh air if you're sick and tired of not being able to tell who's shooting who and how the heck that guy got on the roof. Definitely a change of pace.

Points To Consider When Booking Gold Coast Holiday Accommodation

By Carly Whitmore

Are you on the lookout for Gold Coast holiday accommodation? Prior to making a decision, my experience suggests that you should ask four important questions :

Question One : Are you of the opinion that staying in the right holiday accommodation of your preference will often make your time away with family or friends more enjoyable?

Question Two: Do you worry about arriving at your holiday destination only to discover that you absolutely detest the apartment that has been allocated to you?

Question 3: Would you like to choose the specific holiday apartment or home that will meet your requirements before you leave home?

Question 4 : Would you also like the convenience of being able to check its availability and price in your own time and the capability to book it online?

If your answer is "Yes " to these questions, then you'll find that, sadly, the majority of holiday accommodation suppliers fail in reaching your expectations on most counts.

In a typical situation when you get to their internet site or phone them, you will most likely be given a price for your requested accommodation (a hotel room, an apartment, etc). And if you're fortunate, you might be able to check online the availability of the accommodation you want on the dates you need. If it's your absolute fortunate day, you could even be in a position to book it online.

But what you will struggle to get in the majority of cases is the power to book a specific room or apartment, or even to be assured that you are going to, for example, stay on a high floor or have sea perspectives.

The typical reaction to such requests is : "We shall do all we can to accommodate your request, but we won't guarantee that because it is always subject to availability on the date of your arrival. "

In reality you are actually buying your holiday accommodation in advance knowing only the name of the hotel or apartment building in which you will be staying, and some limited information about the room or apartment that'll be allotted to you when you arrive- subject to availability.

The reason for this procedure is that the accommodation providers try to maximize the occupancy rate of their hotel or apartment building (i.e. their profit ). They do that by making absolutely certain that there are minimal unoccupied openings between bookings and that all of their rooms or apartments (even the inferior ones) get booked.

And the easiest method to do that is to put off the allocation of rooms or apartments until guests arrive, and to give guests with specialrequests the old, "We shall do all we are able to ....." In fact, there is only a limited number of high floors and sea views, so who's going to stay in that second floor flat overlooking the highway!!!

Admittedly, one or two truthful operators do have a split pricing list and will inform you in advance that if you need a high floor with ocean view then you'll need to pay more than that second floor overlooking the highway. This way you know in advance what you are getting at the time of making your booking.

Only a few operators go all of the way and actually list their individual properties on their internet sites, with full description, images, floor plans and virtual tours. This is actually giving the buyer the liberty to select. Incredibly, the prices of these places are comparable with what you get with the, "We shall do all we can....." merchants.

Business commentators argue that in order to thrive in business, businesses must find how to give the customers what they desire for the price they want to pay for it. But most critical of all, companies must be truthful with their customers and tell them up-front what they are actually purchasing and for what cost.

Accommodation suppliers on Australia's Gold Coast, and indeed around Australia, can learn a thing or two from these types of providers about the best way to treat your customers with honesty and respect.

Movie Download Are The Best Solution

By Amy Briggs

If you love movie downloads and you enjoy the convenience of the internet you are probably one of the many who have accidentally stumbled upon free movie downloads. It's important to realize, well before hitting the download button, that these sites are generally not a good idea.

Most free movie download sites are after your personal information for other purposes. Whether they just want your email address or they are looking for something a little more sinister in nature like your personal information, free downloads violate a whole mess of copyright laws that can land you in a whole world of hot water.

The websites that you are really looking for are the movie download subscription sites. These sites are extremely cheap to join and keep you legally covered.

You can find the obscure films, the classics, and the absolute hottest new releases. In order to grab one of the best movies that you want to watch, all you have to do is part with a few dollars for unlimited movie downloads.

You really don't need to be bothered with the illegal movie download sites. These sites are fishing for information and they will lead you to legal problems faster than you could imagine.

If you want the best of the best movies, you are looking for the simple straightforward legal movie downloads that give you access to the full array of movies that have been produced in the United States and around the globe. You won't find this selection in the movie store.

Not everyone likes to watch movies online. Fortunately with today's technology, you can use a movie download service and watch the movies on your television. All you need is a simple device that allows you to intermingle your PC and your television. For less than $20 you can watch your downloaded movies on your television.

Movie downloads allow you to keep the flick of your choice. Legal movie downloads bring you the best in entertainment but don't strap you down to viewing times or rental terms. You just download and watch. As often as you'd like.

Legal movie downloads give you access to a lot more movies. The selection of brick and mortar movie stores and even the selection of movies available through television pay services pale in comparison to the selection offered through movie download subscriptions.

If you are a serious movie watcher, you might end up paying closer to $15, but you can anticipate spending less than one movie rental and a membership fee through your local movie rental store.

Whether you are waiting for a flight or you have been stuck waiting at the doctor's office, you have to admit that life is just a lot more fun when it is accompanied by a legal movie download.

Want To Know More About Flight Turbulences?

By Ivan Mazuranic

Many folks fear to fly on aircrafts and the most common reason is flight turbulence. Allow us to perceive the essential varieties of turbulence and their causes.

Types of Turbulence:

Slight turbulence: You are feeling light-weight tightening of your seat belt. This happens largely due to slight change in altitude/attitude of airplane.

Moderate turbulence: Loose objects might roll here and there. Aircraft and occupants will feel the bumps with pressure against the seat belts.

Severe turbulence: The speedy change in air speed with altitude/angle results in this type of turbulence. Loose objects are tossed and occupants don't seem to be ready to eat and drink properly, walking becomes impossible and you'll feel onerous bumps against seat belts.

Wake turbulence: It happens due to things moving in air.

Connectivity turbulence: When there's simultaneous air rise and fall with warm and cool temperature, it results in connectivity turbulence. It normally occurs at low level and at down slope.

Causes:

Thermal: In high or warm temperatures with slight winds, huge balloons of air reach on top of a sure level and settle within the atmosphere where their temperature is similar to the air. They are invisible to our eyes resulting in slight turbulence.

Transition zones: When aircraft crosses from land surface to water or vice versa due distinction between the thermal characteristics of two surfaces, airplane can experience turbulence.

Mountains: Winds when blow against large obstructions like mountains or skyscrapers cause irregular air movement and this may end in dangerous turbulence if conditions are unfavorable. The up and down motion of air will offer a faux measurement regarding the air pressure resulting in severe tragedies relying upon the peak of mountain.

Thunderstorms: They'll cause dangerous atmospheric activities with dynamic nature and are able to suck in the encircling air into the system or burst giant winds or clouds downward.

Unless turbulence is of very high severity, the aircraft will withstand all types of turbulences while not any damage.

Movie Downloads Often Torrent Sharing

By Raymond Rodriquez

Through movie downloads, you can enjoy blockbusters even without renting a DVD or going to a movie house. With just a computer and broadband internet connection, you can get movies from other people online. Imagine the convenience this means provide among movie buffs.

There are tons of online sites where they can pay for their regular dose of movies. However, there is a free way of getting movies online that many people take advantage of. It is called bit torrent sharing, or P2P (peer to peer) file sharing. And it is not only movies that bit torrent sharing makes available. There are also books, videos, software, music and others.

This works by enabling you to download small bits of files from various web sources, or users, at the same time. When downloading blockbusters, it means you are getting parts of it directly from other people's computer hard drives. Likewise, you are also sharing yours to millions of internet users worldwide.

But before doing so, you need to have a torrent program installed on your computer. Fret not as one can be easily obtained on the net, and for free too. This program is important as it will be the one which will download file pieces from online peers all over the planet.

Once you have successfully installed the application, the next step is to find available films on the net. Using your favorite browser, you need to open a torrent website. It is very easy to find one. Once you have one open, look for the search bar, usually in the upper portion of the torrent website. Simply type in the title of the flick you wish to download, then click on the search button. Almost instantly, a listing of available files related to what you typed in will show up.

You will notice in the list that various movie files will show up, although having the same title. Which you will pick depends on your preference. Do you want something that's of good quality? Then pick a file with a larger size. Do you want something playable on your media player? Then pick a compatible file type.

While you're at it, look for something with the most number of seeders. Seeders are online users or peers which got the particular film you wish to download. Naturally, the more seeders a file has, the faster the downloading time is. However, it will also depend on the computer you are using, or the internet hookup's speed.

Once you have decided on a particular film, double click on it to start the download. Doing so will start up the torrent application, the one which you earlier downloaded and installed on your PC. Simply follow the subsequent instructions, which are very easy, to begin downloading.

Movie downloads usually complete in a few hours. But again depending on factors like the file size, seeders and the speed of your internet connection. You will get a prompt after the entire process is done. And you can enjoy the film right away using your computer's media player.

Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver Reviewed

By Karin Reyes

You always hear that Martin Scorsese is the best living filmmaker, and while that's really up to the individual viewer, you have to concede that he at least ranks in the top tier of movie directors of all time, alongside Kubrick, Hitchcock and Coppola. Whether he's doing his own original material as in Mean Streets or remakes like The Departed, he always puts a personal touch on the film. Taxi Driver is one of his best.

Not many directors are really as capable as Scorsese when it comes to being able to drag you into a fictional world, to build a whole atmosphere around you. You feel like you're sitting shotgun in Travis Bickle's cab right beside him. It almost feels like a documentary for its sheer realism. It is as close as you can get to "found footage" without some gimmick like having one of the characters hold the camera.

You could consider the film the second part of a trilogy with Wim Wenders' Paris, Texas, and John Ford's The Searchers, which both of the other films are loose remakes of. All three of these films tell a very similar story, and it goes to show that a movie not so much about what it's about, but how it is about it.

The Searchers is an adventure film rotating around the themes of racism and lonesomeness. Paris, Texas takes a similar story and tells it in a sweet way, focusing on issues of lonesomeness and family, and Scorsese focuses on lonesomeness and the use of violence as a means of personal validation. In all three, the heroes serve as escorts, attempting to rescue people and put them where they need to be, reuniting them with their families, but in all three, the heroes must leave once more in the end, forever alone.

In each film, a real statement on loneliness is made. This is what helps the heroes of these films to be so easy to relate to, even as they do things that most of us would never be proud of having done. Even Travis Bickle, who commits so many acts of grisly violence, is such a human and endearing character in spite of his mental illness, because we know what it is to be that desperate for validation.

Everyone, sooner or later, feels that intense, terrible loneliness. That feeling that, even though you're surrounded by other people, you're trapped in a little bubble and incapable of breaking out and truly connecting with anyone. This is where Travis is stuck in his life, and we know that that can drive a person crazy.

Few people are willing to talk about the darkest aspect of the film, because it involves looking at your own darker instincts: We root for Travis Bickle in the end. We shouldn't, but we do, because we wish he could be the hero, we wish the film was a western so that his simplistic moral compass would be correct. The tragedy is that it's not a western.

While the film serves as part of a trilogy to The Searchers and Paris, Texas, it's also something of a companion piece to First Blood, another film about a lonely Vietnam veteran who uses violence as a means of personal validation.

Profitable Sports Gambling Begins With Discipline

By Ross Everett

Books on other 'winnable' gambling pursuits like horse racing and poker are good resources of theoretical information for the sports gambler. While for some reason there hasn't been much written specific to the sports handicapper that deals with the discipline from a serious theoretical level, there are countless books devoted to a thoughtful discussion of horse racing and poker.

Poker--like sports betting--can be a profitable endeavor, and one in which knowledge and skill can counteract the theoretical odds against him. Legendary poker theorist Bob Caro once noted that while there are some professional poker players, sports bettors or blackjack players there's not a single professional roulette player.

Basically, this is because that no combination of skill, strategy or money management can negate the house edge in roulette and many other casino games. While Caro likes to stress the importance of the decisions that a poker player makes to his long term profitability, in roulette player decisions simply don't matter over the long haul. Red or black, even or odd, the house edge remains the same.

Caro strongly emphasizes the importance of discipline at the table to a poker player's long term profitability. The average person goes into a casino to "escape" from the real world--in other words, he goes into a casino to temporarily forget the need for discipline that exists in day to day life. He wants to have a few drinks, do a little gambling and enjoy a break from the mundane. Casinos exist to facilitate this 'escape' while using their mathematical edge to turn a profit. While poker operates somewhat differently in terms of the casino making money, the motivation that drives a recreational poker player to the tables is no different than in any other casino game.

Caro's emphasis on discipline in poker is also true for the serious sports gambler. The foundation of a professional sports bettor's long term success is to approach it with the same discipline, rigor and professionalism that he would any other job. If you continue to think about it in the same terms as the recreational gambler does, you're in for a difficult road. The more seriousness that you bring to your sports betting, the higher the likelihood that you'll be successful.

There's nothing wrong with being a recreational sports gambler, or a recreational gambler of any sort. They're vital to those of us who do this for a living since they're what keeps casinos and sportsbooks in business. Ultimately, the best handicapping is pointless without a sportsbook to take the action.

If you want to bet recreationally, thats fine and unless you have the dedication and discipline to do it right its probably better for most people. You might be able to win more often and lose less frequently with some enhanced discipline. Ultimately, however, as a recreational gambler the only discipline you really need to know is the same as for other casino games or any hobby"just dont bet more than you can afford to lose. After that, youre on your own.

Buying A Sleeping Bag That You'll Be Happy With

By Mark Walters

If you spend a lot of time outdoors camping, then you know how important choosing the right sleeping bag can be. When looking to buy a sleeping bag there are many choices that you have to make in order to get the one most suitable for you. You need to decide what size and style you want. You need to determine what type of filler and lining you want. You need to know how warm / cold the climate is that you will be using it in.

The first decision is to choose the shape or style. Once this decision is made, the others fall into place more easily. The basic choices are mummy, rectangle and combination and each addresses different preferences of each individual user. If warmth is your primary concern then the mummy style may be just what you need. It adapts and molds closer to the body and allows less space for cold air to get in than other styles while the drawstring hood or draft collar keep warm air from escaping around your neck.

The rectangle style bag allows much more space for movement but does not have a hood or draft collar. Rectangular bags are indeed a great deal wider and arguably more comfortable. As an addition, two rectangular bags could be joined together to form a much larger double sleeping bag to hold two people. The combination sleeping bags use different features from each style, enabling you to possible have the best of both worlds, depending on your preferences. It is important to look at all styles and judge what you would personally feel more comfortable in.

Once you have chosen the style you want, the next step is to choose a lining and filler. The filler is especially important if you are allergic to down, or have a particular sensitivity to down with asthma or other respiratory conditions. There are two fillers to decide on - synthetic and down. A synthetic fiber filler is generally heavier than down but when wet, it does not absorb water so therefore insulating ability is not reduced. A down filler is lighter than synthetic fiber but it requires more care and you must not get it wet or it will be useless.

It is essential to take note of the temperature ratings of each bag. Know the expected temperature range where you will most often be using the bag and then choose one that is rated for a colder environment. Having more warmth available to you than you need is the prudent choice. The final decision to be made is the size of the bag. You should always be sure the bag is longer than your height by a few inches. It allows you to stretch out full-length and that is a vital comfort factor.

Understanding The Difference Between A Bowie Knife And A Hunting Knife

By Blake Benson

Isn't a Bowie knife a hunting knife? The answer to that question is both "yes" and "no." Why such an ambiguous answer? To understand this, you will need to look closer at the reality of the Bowie knife as applied to the realm of hunting. Most certainly, you can take a Bowie knife along on a hunting trip. In fact, it's recommended. However, that does not make this a hunting knife.

Most hunting knives are designed for a single purpose. They excel at this purpose, but usually perform very poorly at any other use. For example, a gut hook knife is used for skinning an animal without puncturing the intestines, which can spoil the meat. However, you will find that it is not so great at other tasks. The same can be said for most other types of "hunting knives." A Bowie knife, on the other hand, is a multiuse tool that can serve numerous different tasks.

Many outdoors people end up using Bowie knives for all manner of tasks, some of them very rough. The knives can hold up to this but, in reality, it will affect their overall value and usefulness in the future. A Bowie's real strength is not in the fact that it makes a particularly good hatchet but in the fact that, if there's nothing else around, your Bowie can get the job done. You just may have to look for a new knife afterwards.

There are numerous different designs of Bowie knives, so it's important to point out that a Bowie is a specific type of knife. Some hunting knives have Bowie-style blades-with clipped points and blood grooves-but aren't really Bowie knives. Bowies have hand guards, a throwback to their combat origins. These are usually never seen on hunting knives. If they are, they're minimal and are designed to protect the user from their own blade, rather than the blade of another.

These are just a few of the reasons that a Bowie knife might be considered a hunting knife but is actually much, much more. These beautiful, versatile, durable blades can serve you well for years to come with the proper maintenance, and can ensure that you have the tools you need at all times.

Movie downloads are the most practical and cost efficient way of leisure and entertainment today.

Large families often find going to the see a film, a big burden on their budget. Watching a film should be a fun and carefree family experience, but that is not always the case because, for one reason, the tickets to the latest films are pricey. Nowadays, most households can no longer bear the expense of watching a movie very often.

Aside from this, watching blockbuster films could really be a hassle. You have to wait through a long line of moviegoers who all want the best seat in the theatre. Sometimes, hours are wasted waiting for the next show time because of sold out seats and you end up losing the thrill by the time you get in, finding out you must sit in the last row.

Kids are always asking to go to the movies but have you noticed that you rarely pay reduced prices for kid's tickets at movie theatres any more? So besides full priced tickets for your kids, you also need to pay for yourself to see the movie if the kids are not old enough to go on their own. You then stop at the refreshments stand for popcorn and drinks and by the time you get into the theatre you have spent a fortune and an hour and a half to two hours later it is over. Not very cost effective according to most standards.

What about date nights for the parents? For mom and dad to go out in the evenings, they first need to find a babysitter and that is going to set them back extra money that they probably don't have. Then they also do the popcorn and drink stop and all the while they are both wondering how the children are. So by the time the movie is over they have spent more money than they can probably afford and were not even really relaxed while watching. Once again this does not make much sense.

There is no limit on how many movies you want to download, from the classic to the hip. Everyone can choose their favorite movie and download them in their computer anytime. Movie downloads are also highly recommended for families with little kids. Children tend to watch their favorite cartoons over and over again memorizing their much loved character's dialogues and movements. Having their favorite cartoon movies downloaded will assure you that they will not keep on asking you to bring them back to the movie theatre for another round.

The best thing about this option is that once downloaded you can watch the movie over and over again and it does not cost you a cent more. This is a great feature especially for the kids as we all know they love watching their favorite movies time and time again, something that drives us adults crazy.

Movie download sites are plentiful but the only thing you need to be aware of is the difference between the legal and the illegal sites. Downloading from illegal sites can land you in a whole lot of trouble so you need to make sure you are using a legal site. The main difference between the sites is that the legal sites normally charge you a nominal fee for registration or a small fee for every download that you do. So now, thanks to movie downloads, families can watch their favorite movies, even if it means microwave popcorn!

Miami Tops Tampa Bay In NFL Preseason Florida Battle

By Ross Everett

Success in the NFL mandates that even when teams aren't playing their best they need to find a way to win. The Miami Dolphins found a way to win ugly in their NFL preseason battle of Florida on Thursday night. After spotting the Bucs a 6-0 lead, Miami used a late first half field goal and scored the only touchdown of the second half to comeback for the 10-6 win.

A starting QB battle in Tampa was the biggest storyline of the game and veteran Byron Leftwich appears to have gained the edge over Luke McCown. Bucs coach Raheem Morris gave little indication as to his preference in postgame comments:

"Obviously you want somebody to jump up and take it. We'll find out when we go back, look at the tape and evaluate this thing."

McCown had a rough night, with two sacks and no points scored. He gave a verbose no comment on his status as starter:

"It's not for me to say. ... My part in it is preparing every day, being the best I can be and getting better from my mistakes. As long as I feel like I'm doing that, then I'm OK."

Leftwich, meanwhile, was 9 of 17 for 100 yards and came up big on several third down completions. He had very little to say after the game:

"Hopefully, I'm the guy. I felt good. I missed a few, but I hit a few also. Luckily for me on the ones I missed, I made plays on the following play to get those first downs."

Bucs running back Cadillac Williams returned to action after major knee surgery seven months ago. Hes been limited in the last three seasons due to injuries, but looked solid in picking up 54 yards on eight carries. Afterwards, he said the knee problems are not an issue:

"The knee is not an issue to me. ... I feel great. I'm just loving what I do."

The game had several delays due to rain and lightening, the longest a 45 minute stoppage Dolphins QB Chad Pennington said that its hard to evaluate his team's performance due to the strange starts and stops:

"It was a very odd game for us, as far as the rain delay, a lot of stoppages of play and things like that We were able to come out get a score before halftime and get a score after the half. We'll build on that. We'll be critical of ourselves and make sure we don't let a win overshadow what we need to do to get better."

The Dolphins will conclude their NFL preseason play next Thursday against the Saints at New Orleans. Tampa Bay will host Houston next Friday in their final preseason contest. Miami will get the NFL regular season underway against the Atlanta Falcons at The Georgia Dome on Sunday, September 13. Tampa Bay will welcome the Dallas Cowboys to The Cigar City on the same day to kick off their 2009 campaign.

The Film Mind Twisting Movie Memento

By Jillian Valentine

Chances are, if you're taking a look into an article like this one, than you are trying to get a better glimpse into the very critically acclaimed and instant classic, "Memento". Sure, there is a good bit to know and to understand about this film, most of which will likely be discussed within this article and the content of its paragraphs.

I suppose that the best way for you to learn anything at all about this film, would be to really take a brief overview of the plot synopsis so that you can best understand the sequence of events that allow this film's climactic points to even be possible. The only trouble with just reading or writing a plot synopsis for this film, is that it follows no feasible chronological order, and therefore it becomes difficult to describe the events of the film.

So for the sake of this article and the explanation of the film itself, you will simply have to excuse the film being described in chronological order, when in all actuality these events are rather spread out through the film in various orders. The reason for this is the very nature of the film, and without it being so sporadic, the film might not have been as good.

The reason, is that the main character of the piece, Leonard Shelby, suffers from anterograde amnesia. This is a condition that allows you to keep all the memories that you have up until the time you get it, but you cannot create new memories from then after. He got the condition from receiving a blow to the head when he attempted to stop two men from raping and killing his wife. He managed to kill one of the two, while the other clubbed him in the head. This blow caused the amnesia.

As unique as the experience is to watch on film, Leonard is often on the wrong end of someone's dirty laundry or just plain getting taken advantage of. He is talked into doing all kinds of things on the premise that the individuals and events are related to finding the second killer of his wife. Anything that he feels is important to tracking down the second killer, he tattoos onto his body.

It isn't long into the story that Lenny gets a call from a guy claiming to be a police officer (later to call himself Teddy) who has information about the whereabouts of the second killer. Lenny believes him and soon he is in route to meet this Jimmy, a slummy drug dealer. Turns out, after Lenny kills him, we learn that he had nothing to do with Lenny's wife's murder.

You meet several people throughout the story, and they all play an intricate role into the very complicated nature of this plot. In the last sections of the film, you deduce along with Leonard who the second killer is, and you accompany him to exact his revenge. Though the film was written very well, you might care to take note of the incredible performances from Guy Pearce (Leonard) and Joe Pantaliano (Teddy).

"Memento" can be hard to follow if you aren't paying very close attention to it. The film was likely as successful as it was given the nature of the title character's condition and how the events of the film played into the chaos that living without being able to make new memories would inspire.

Its A Wonderful Life Is A Movie Holiday Classic

By Althea Schmidt

Its a Wonderful Life may well be Frank Capra's masterpiece. It is the film where his positive outlook on life, his humanity, his humane portrayal of the characters, shines through most brightly. All of Capra's works present his philosophy on life and love, but this film defines that philosophy, and still stands as the greatest Christmas movie of all time.

The nostalgic inner child in you may disagree and cite A Christmas Story or How the Grinch Stole Christmas or even It's Christmas Charlie Brown! The cynic in you will jokingly cite Die Hard or Lethal Weapon as the greatest holiday film ever made, but those sides of you are both wrong! When it comes to a holiday film, you need to go with your heart and soul, and that points you towards It's a Wonderful Life.

The film deals with the darker side of the holidays, the depression, the self pity, the nihilism, despair and disappointment that so few filmmakers have the courage to address. In fact, the second act begins with Jimmy Stewart, the warmest and most friendly actor in history, attempting suicide! To start from such an incredibly low point takes confidence.

Capra digs Stewart's George Bailey a pit of sadness and pain, and watches as he learns to live again and climbs himself out. This is true positivity, true life affirming hope. Any old lifetime channel original movie can be positive and optimistic by simply never facing the hero or heroine with any challenges, but Capra knew that the only time optimism counts for anything is when the whole world is telling you to only see the worst side of things.

The movie ranks alongside Rocky as one of the greatest "happy tears" films of all time. If you're not shedding them by the end of the film, then sorry, but... What the heck is wrong with you? Any real, live human being can't help but at least feel a little moisture in their eyes when the bell rings and the angel gets its wings. It is simply a matter of optimism triumphing over negativity.

Interestingly, the film was a flop on release. The director had always been a popular, money-making film maker, but for some reason, this one just didn't grab the movie-going audience. Of course, the movie has since become one of the most successful of all time on video, DVD, second runs and, of course, cable, but at the time, it almost sank Capra's career.

Another interesting point: Film legend has it that Stewart was the director's only choice for the lead, but in fact, his first choice had been the other legendary nice guy of the screen, Henry Fonda. Fonda could have turned in an incredible performance, but Stewart really plays the character of a lifetime in George Bailey.

There were a number of alternative endings considered, but none of them would have been as satisfying as the way the story wraps up in the film... Except maybe the Saturday Night Live sketch where Bailey leads the whole town to Potter's house to give him a comeuppance... Interestingly, this ending, while a spoof, was nearly the same as an alternative ending that was actually filmed!
