The Classic Mr Smith Goes To Washington

By Jessie Franklin

Mr Smith Goes To Washington was thought to be a very controversial film for its time. It starred James Stewart, who played the main character Jefferson Smith. Jefferson was a simple man and a bit of a local hero known for his honesty. And after a series of events, he becomes a United States Senator, feeling much like a fish out of water.

When Jefferson first arrives in Washington D. C., he is completely fascinated to be a part of the American political machine. Many of his peers in the Senate doubt his ability to be an effective politician. Several others prey on his lack of experience and naivete. But Smith is too caught up in the awe of the white house to even notice.

Jefferson's Governor selected him for Senate because he thought his simple, wide eyed, average Joe ways would make him the perfect stooge for his corrupt boss in the Senate. They needed someone that would not cause them any problems and would do exactly what they said. They agreed Jefferson would be the right fit for the job. He was well known in his small community for being an honest man and this is exactly the image they needed to hide their wicked schemes behind.

Almost everyone around Jefferson was in on the plan. They all knew exactly why he was there. Others resented such a simple man that seem to bumble his way through speeches, being there. Jefferson also felt out of place but he had no idea how he was being used. Their plan seemed to be working until Jefferson realized he was a pawn in their corrupt game of politics. Then he became a problem that none of them saw coming.

When Jefferson finds out about the corruption taking place within the Senate he immediately takes a stand and fights to restore the integrity of Senate. He is able to defeat his enemies in the Senate that were scheming against him. They took him for a small town simpleton and had no idea of the tenacity he possessed to fight against them. He devises a plan to be heard that ultimately brings down his corrupt adversaries.

He starts a filibuster on the State floor and exposes the American public to the illegal dealings within the Senate. This leads to the termination of the guilty parties. He is then applauded as a great American hero; proving that the American people still value virtue and honesty within their government.

This film received mixed reviews from its critics. On one hand it was applauded for its effort to expose corruption within American politics. But on the other, it was criticized for showing the Senate in a bad light. Many notable dignitaries tried to have the film banned because they felt it portrayed the Unites States government as a ban of thieves. Many other were concerned about the effect the film would have on other countries and how they would view America.

Mr Smith Goes to Washington is definitely an American film classic. The theme explores the idea that it only takes one person to stand up for justice. Integrity and honesty are still values Americans hold true and dear to the operation of their government. And Jefferson proved to be that hero people needed to look up to.

Edmonton Gains Sole Possession of First Place In CFL West With Win Over Stamps

By Ross Everett

The Edmonton Eskimos survived a wild back and forth CFL shootout against the Calgary Stampeders before prevailing 38-35 to take over sole possession of first place in the CFL West. Ricky Ray hit Fred Stamps with a 23 yard touchdown pass with just nine seconds to play to earn the victory, erasing the lead that Calgary had earned with their own TD pass less than a half minute earlier.

Winning QB Ricky Ray said that he enjoyed playing in the shootout:

"That was a ton of fun. In the CFL you get to play in a lot of games like this, especially against a guy like (Calgary quarterback Henry) Burris, who has done this to us. It's great to come out on the winning end of a shoot-out like that. It's a great uplift for the team. It's a huge win for us."

With a bye week on deck, Eskimos head coach Richie Hall said that the outcome couldnt have been timed any better:

"Regardless of what happens, we are coming back in first place. Now we have one up on Calgary. It's going to be a dogfight for all the teams in the West and any chance you get to win, especially a win like this, it's a real bonus. It's great for our confidence."

Calgarys Burris remembered a very similar game last year where Edmonton won by the same margin on a last play touchdown:

"They got us last year in this situation and of course you didn't think it was going to happen again or even could happen again. It felt so great to get that late touchdown and with 38 seconds on the clock nobody was even thinking about last year. We had to stop Jackson and we didn't. And we had to stop Ray and we didn't. Kudos to Edmonton."

Calgary returns to action on Aug. 28 in Toronto while the Eskimos will next play on Aug. 29 when they host Hamilton. The two CFL provincial rivals from Alberta will face each other twice more this season.

A Synopsis Of Takeshi Kitano's Kikujiro

By Leonard Whitfield

Takeshi Kitano arrived on the filmmaking scene in Japan with his film "Violent Cop". He had been an actor and a comedian and... Really just a general purpose renaissance man up until that point. He was cast in the comedy action film Violent Cop as a supporting character, but when the director dropped out, he took the reins of the film as the new director and rewrote the entire script into a sort of Dirty Harry story about a sociopath detective who will literally stop at nothing to kill the bad guy. Kikujiro is a much different film than that one, and certainly belongs on your must download internet movies queue.

Kikujiro is really something different, or was at the time, for Kitano. He had generally been creating violent gangster films about the Yakuza. He first moved away from that genre with a film about surfers. When asked why his new movie had no yakuza in it, he said "Well you know yakuza have to chop off their fingers on their left hand when they disobey orders. And surfers have to paddle their boards out to sea. If a yakuza tried to surf, he would only paddle in circles." This sense of humor defines all of his work, including the sentimental, touching tale told in Kikujiro.

Kitano's career has had a lot of twists and turns. He began as an emcee of a nightclub. When the comedian there got sick, he took over as comic for the night, and he was a huge star on the comedy scene for a number of years.

Eventually he became a popular TV show host, and even got a chance to make his own video game with Takeshi's Challenge. This game was really more of a torture device than anything, with ridiculous challenges such as demanding that the player hit a button thousands of times to progress, or sing into a microphone plugged into the Nintendo for an hour straight. The game was made, as the title screen declares, by "a man who hates video games." Well, the game certainly hates the player.

Kitano's odd sense of humor comes through very well in this movie. Kitano plays Kikujiro, an old man who fits the lovable loser archetype. He escorts a young boy across Japan to meet his estranged mother. He winds up blowing all their money at the tracks, thinking the kid is some kind of psychic after predicting three race winners in a row.

Later, Kitano is forced to beg for food for himself and the boy. He gets two sandwiches, hides one, and tells the boy "You eat, I don't need food right now". He then hides around the corner to eat his own sandwich. It's a funny scene, showing that he may be a lovable loser, but he really wants the child's respect and isn't afraid of lying to get it!

The movie is, again, very sweet. Watching the old man and the young boy bond is moving and touching, and within one another, the two find their own definition of the word family.

Sonatine is the Kitano film that is most well known in the US, but Kikujiro is without a doubt one of his very best.

How Illegal Movie Downloads Might Affect You

By Polly Callahan

People often download movies illegally through file sharing programs and seem to think this is alright simply because they are available. If you are caught doing this you could face very large fines. When movie downloads are done illegally they affect everyone who watches movies. We can all do our part to put a stop to this.

If you have a file sharing program on your computer then you could be part of the problem without even knowing it. If you have this program then people may be able to download any file, including movies, without your permission. If you have such a program on your PC then you should strictly limit what people can download from you.

If you download movies from file sharing programs then they are usually illegal. You may save a few dollars now but it could cost you a lot more. You could face fines if you are caught and it could even raise the cost of legal movie downloads. Keep in mind that your internet address can be traced and the authorities can come to your home.

Illegal movies tend to have many other drawbacks. You may not even get the movie you want or it could have a virus attached to it. If it has a virus then you could harm your computer and possible wipe out important files. The picture quality on a lot of them is very poor and may not even be in a language you can understand. Chances are you will be put to a lot of trouble for nothing.

Downloading movies from a legal site is the best way to watch movies from your computer. These sites are often backed by major studios and you can be sure they are safe and that you will get the movie you want. They have everything you need right at your fingertips to watch all of the movies on their site. Even sites like Netflix are considering offering movies for download.

There are many sites where you can sign up to watch satellite on your computer as well. You can get movies from all over the world for a onetime fee. This will allow you to watch both movies and television programs just like you would on your television. You can find these sites easily and most of these services are reasonably priced.

Is it really worth it to get a few free movies? With all of the possible consequences why not just go with a legal site in the first place. Copyright laws protect the people who make these movies. Imagine if everyone simply waited until one single person bought the movie and then downloaded it. Eventually they would no longer be able to afford to make these movies.

You can help stop illegal movie downloads. If you don't use the file sharing systems that allow this or even if you make certain that no one can copy movies from your computer then you become part of the solution. Remember you are also setting an example for your children; teach them to be responsible and not steal in any form.

Rio De Janerio Wins 2016 Summer Olympic Games

By Ross Everett

South America will host the Summer Olympic Games for the first time in 2016, as Rio De Janeiro, Brazil was awarded the honor on Friday. Rio beat out the US choice of Chicago, Illinois along with Tokyo, Japan and Madrid, Spain to earn the right to host the games. Despite a high pressure effort from the American power elite--including President Barack Obama and TV gabfest queen Oprah Winfrey--Chicago was the first city eliminated from contention. Tokyo was the next to go, before Rio got the nod over Madrid in the final round of balloting.

Bookmakers offered odds on the host city choice, with Rio listed as second favorite at +200. Chicago had been the wagering favorite at most books, particularly after President Obama got involved personally in the US bid effort. Chicago was bet as high as a -300 favorite, while Madrid and Tokyo were priced in the +250 range. Some suggest that Tokyo didnt deserve to have such short odds, but was the beneficiary of regional pride from the notoriously enthusiastic betting population of Japan.

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, President of Brazil, got the better of his US counterpart with a passionate speech that stood in marked contrast to Obamas typically baleful collection of talking points;

"It is a time to address this imbalance. It is time to light the Olympic cauldron in a tropical country."

The Olympic committee was apparently swayed by this presentation and paid no mind to Rios many downsides. It is without a doubt the most dangerous of the finalist cities, where drug cartels and armed bands of thugs roam without impunity. Well do to Rio citizens are used to removing watches and jewelry before they drive anywhere lest they be targeted by carjacking brigands. Rios murder rate is also one of the highest in the world. Brazilian bid officials have stressed that security will be a priority at the games and it better be lest the Olympics turn into a bloodbath.

Some IOC members suggested that the summary dismissal of Chicagos bid was more of a rebuke of the notoriously corrupt USOC. The last two Olympics held in the US were tainted by crime and corruption. The'96 Atlanta Olympics were disrupted by a terrorist bombing, while the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Games were marred by a well known bribery and corruption scandal.

The Mapes Hotel: Lost Landmark Of Northern Nevada History

By Ross Everett

On January 31, 2000, the historic Mapes Hotel in Reno was imploded by 75 pounds of explosives tucked into the art-deco structures support columns. The destruction of the Mapes put an end to years of efforts to preserve the building via lawsuits, redevelopment proposals, and grass roots action. The National Trust for Historic Preservation took up the cause of the Mapes, and challenged the destruction in a suit that eventually reached the Nevada Supreme Court.

While the logic and necessity of demolishing the Mapes is very questionable, one thing that is certain is that the hotel was an important part of Northern Nevada history. The Mapes opened in'47 and with it ushered in a new era for casino gambling and the state of Nevada. Despite some historical revisionism that suggests that the modern era began in Las Vegas with Bugsy Siegel's famed Flamingo, the Mapes was actually the first building in America to have a hotel, casino and live entertainment under the same roof. The Mapes attracted countless celebrities who'd make it their home when business brought them to Northern Nevada--this included movie stars like Clark Gable, TV stars like the cast of 'Bonanza' and political power brokers like infamous anti-Communist crusader Joseph McCarthy.

In the 50s and 60s it became, along with Lake Tahoes Cal-Neva Lodge the place to be seen in Northern Nevada. The top floor, window-walled Sky Room showcased performances by the legends: Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Jackie Gleason, Louis Prima, Mae West, Milton Berle, Sammy Davis, Jr., and the Marx Brothers among others. Subsequent years were not kind to downtown Reno but the Mapes continued to do well during the 60's and 70's. The hotel finally closed in'82, due more to financial difficulties experienced by the Mapes family caused by one of their other Northern Nevada gaming properties than anything else.

Reno never experienced the massive growth that occurred in Las Vegas and southern Nevada, and for that reason the destruction of the Mapes is more open to debate than the hotel demolitions to the south. Even the demolition of The Sands--perhaps the most historically significant casino in the state--is hard to argue against given the inability of such a small property to compete in the current Las Vegas marketplace and in light of the value of the mid-strip real estate. The old properties may have historic value to pop culture historians, but their survival doesn't make economic sense. They're simply 'analog players in a digital world'.

This is not the case in Reno, where land and buildings for development in virtually every casino area are abundant. The official reason that the Mapes had to come down was that the city needed the land--which sits along the banks of the Truckee River--to expand its riverside district of art galleries, restaurants and shops. The revitalization of downtown Reno is definitely needed and a legitimate goal, but at the same time it is hard to think that the Mapes was a barrier to this. Indeed, a number of proposals for redevelopment including office space, artists lofts and upscale senior housing would have probably served to enhance the livability of the downtown area. For whatever reason, the City Redevelopment Authority wouldn't approve any of the proposals and the fate of the Mapes was sealed.

The role of the City Redevelopment Authority was questioned throughout the process. Overlooking the Truckee River, the hotel was on a prime location between the downtown casino area and the riverfront district. A number of sound financial proposals were presented that would preserve the integrity of the structure including condominiums, office space, and perhaps most viable, upscale senior apartments. Oddly, all of these proposals were turned down by the citys Redevelopment Agency which continued to maintain that demolition was the only viable option despite copious evidence to the contrary.

Following the 2000 demolition, the lot remained vacant for over a year until a temporary ice skating rink was hastily constructed the following winter. The property has been improved and the rink is now permanent which, while not in itself a bad use for the land, further calls into question the efficacy of demolishing the structure. It would appear that the city had no clue what to do with the land, but for whatever reason wanted the building brought down. This has led to all sorts of conspiracy theories, from the City Development Agency having financial incentive to raze the hotel to rumors that the building was haunted and was destroyed to keep the Reno area from being overrun with paranormal activity. Whatever the reason for the decision, the city of Reno has lost a beautiful art deco treasure that played a significant part in the economic growth of the state.

The Biggest Selection Of Films Are Found At Movie Download Sites

By Keith Casey

Watch the greatest TV shows and best movies by using a movie download service. You can find them out there and watch the newest release available. Like Watchman, it's an excellent movie, but remembers it's not a good choice for the younger children in your family.

Some of these movie download services have huge libraries of choices. Giving you new movies and old classics to choose from. Well here are a few other suggestions for movies to watch online. Choices that most people may not even think of.

In most cases you may not even need to download software to use those movie download services either. But if you find a Divx download site, you may need to add a program that will run those on your computer.

Of course, if you don't have the same taste in movies you won't like all of these choices. So keep that in mind. You can look around and find movies you think will be great too. First let's start with foreign films.

Another popular movie to watch online right now or buy will be Fast and Furious. The original cast is once again brought together for yet another fantastic action movie. Vin Diesel again brings to light as a great actor and more in this movie.

Check out Tokyo Zombie, but make sure you get it in Japanese with subtitles. Read as you watch, it's a great movie, B quality, but very funny and bloody. Remember my favorites are horror movies though, so these are just too hard to pass up.

Another in this type of genre is "Machine Girl". It again is a B quality movie, and something I would have never gotten as a movie rental before. But it was actually very funny when I watched it. You have to have an open mind when you get these movies.

Watchmen, we watched recently, when it first came out. Got it from a movie download service. One of the best I've seen in a while. Be warned though, it's not a movie that is for kids under the age of 14 though.

A classic old movie that again would have not been a choice until these movie download services were available is "Johnny get a gun". An excellent movie, a bit long, but well worth the time to watch. Oh yeah we have our computer and TV hooked up so we watched it that way.

Since we pay one cost per month and get unlimited movie downloads, and movie rentals. I never feel bad if I get a movie that is bad. I just shut it off and pick another movie. For this reason I've discovered some awesome movies I would have not watched before.

However, I don't want to point those out, because you may like them. For a great quirky romance, see "Dan in Real life". It's a really cute, as my husband would say, chick flick. But you know what your husband can watch it with you too. Expand your choices and try new movies out with movie download services.

Going To The Movies Is Very Expensive So Use Movie Downloads

By Luz Ellison

You have many options to alternate your ways of renting a movie. It does not look so satisfying that after you have watch the movie, you will go again to the store either driving the way to return the DVD rented. One option is movie downloads from websites. Mere click and it will lead to them rendering the service you needed.

Those movie download sites that are legal let you burn the downloaded file so that you can watch it in playable DVD. The download also has permission from the owners and the rest are films acquired. These low cost websites does not have to direct the user to another site because if it will, there is the possibility that the site is illegally performing.

The key to find that prominent site for movie downloads is setting up criteria. One part should be is that the site will have the full movie for the latest introduced movies. Even some can manage to give free download. In addition to it, the procedure should not be too complicated that the tendency is that few will understand and follow. So, consider also the movie rate and review.

Although recently, the internet user have preferred the sharing peer to peer of their file programs. Take the Kazaa and BitTorrent for example. They allow user to share pirated videos and yet it does violate the law of copyright. In argue to it, many businesses get used to the principle and structures applied.

Titles should be organized for movie relation and most sites have this for the purpose of huge selection for viewers. Download managers are sometimes a requirement to be downloaded. Such program will keep you track of the added movies in queue. Other sites on the other hand ask for video installation if there is no track software available in the computer.

Let us take the example of movie capital as registering free and unlimited membership. The deal with their website has the option of either terminating or renewing the membership in low price after the allotted time of agreement. But as long as you are a member in their site, you will have the access to movies available. Remember that it is a good criterion that a website will be user friendly to consumers.

YouTube is a legal site after the film producers have resulted with a successful experiment in their pay per click download. Now, global audiences are even taking part in it. Basic step in downloading is being direct with the application. See to it that you will be downloading applicable format. Be aware with the financial transactions. After all, your money is invested there.

We value entertainment much. It will be more comfortable in your home to watch the movie downloads rather than spending your money renting DVDs. There are sure benefits and it will only be attained if you so allow it.

Everyone Can Fly

By Rod Yeager Jr

Evan Krueger rose from the ashes when he posted a blog last January. He had been missing in action for the past few months. But, it was for a good reason. He passed his private pilot check ride, which earned him his Private Pilot's License. Of course, the test was hard, but rewarding. After getting his license, Evan devoted all his time to school, and temporarily set aside the world of aviation.

He reviewed all procedures, regulations, and materials. Evan prepared all paperworks, too. The day before his examination was the most tiring because he gave every part of the training one more go.

Evan's test was scheduled at 9: 00 AM. He was there two hours earlier to fill out more documents and review more. Bob, his examiner, was there at there on the dot. They started with the oral part first. Evan aced all of the questions, except for the part about taking care of emergencies.

At 9: 00 AM the next day, his check ride would start. He arrived there much earlier to submit other paperworks. He was able to review some more. At the prescribed time, Bob, his examiner, arrived and they immediately got it on. The check ride consisted of the two parts: oral and practical. So far, Evan was doing well. In the first part, until Bob asked about emergency procedures. He thought that he failed the test already because his examiner had to lead him to the right answers.

He was supposed to land on a piece of land which he thought was full of soy beans, but was corn instead. After a couple more of routines, they were getting ready for a short field landing. Like before, Evan was doing great before Bob asked him to "turn around right away." He was so sure, at that time, that he failed. When they were finished, he was waiting for Bob's reminders, which was given to him. He was even more surprised to know that he passed the checkride. Evan filled out the last few documents, and proudly held a temporary pilot's license.

After that exam, Evan looked back to his logbook and recalled all the digits. Based from the records, he had a total of 167 landings and 43.7 hours of flight time. His total expenses were at $5, 953.20, which included his rental, flight instruction, a test, check ride, and miscellaneous supplies.

NFL Preseason Handicapping Basics

By Ross Everett

There's not much 'middle ground' when it comes to the desirability of betting NFL preseason games. The overly conservative handicappers suggest that its a poor wagering opportunity, while the 'boiler room' sports touts try to suggest that short of a fixed game there's no more sure thing than preseason football. There's a degree of truth in both views. Handicapping preseason NFL football is a unique discipline unto itself, but with knowledge and caution it can be a profitable endeavor.

The most compelling argument against preseason wagering is simply that the games don't count. While there are often spots during the regular season where teams may seem more or less motivated, in theory they all want to win. That's not something that can be taken as a 'given' during the preseason, however, as the individual agendas of NFL coaching staffs can very widely. Some might want to win games to establish a winning attitude, others might put a greater focus on working in a new offensive or defensive scheme. Others may prioritize evaluating talent at key positions, while others may simply want to make it through to the regular season without any significant injuries. With all of the uncertainty swirling around preseason football, handicapping wins and losses against the pointspread can be exceedingly difficult.

But like the old saying goes "every dark cloud has a silver lining". And the divergent agendas at play in preseason football can be seen as precisely why it is a good wagering opportunity. For example, say the Superbowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers are set to play an 'also ran' team like the Houston Texans. By regular season standards, the Steelers would almost certainly be favored. In the preseason, however, they'll often have a different agenda for the individual game. A "better" team has more concern about protecting key players. and usually has fewer personnel decisions to deal with. They don't need to worry about implementing coaching changes, or creating 'team chemistry'. As a result, 'better' teams frequently approach preseason games as a mere annoyance.

Now, lets look at the other side of the equation. A "lesser" team by regular season standards might have a number of starting spots or key backup spots up for grabs. They may have new coaches to impress, or new offensive or defensive coordinators whose schemes they'll have to implement. Certainly, winning any games"whether or not they count in the standings"are of utmost importance to losing teams trying to turn things around. Finally, a bad team can gain a lot more psychologically from beating a playoff team than the playoff team can from beating a doormat. A struggling team that is destined to lose a lot during the regular season won't have a lot of bright spots, so a preseason win against one of the league's elite can mean a lot more.

While some teams could care less about the result of preseason games, few want to enter the regular season having lost them all. In light of this fact, a successful preseason situation that has stood the test of time is to bet on teams that lost their first two exhibition games outright. This situation has produced a winning percentage right around 60%.

There may be no greater determining factor of a team's preseason success than the philosophy of their head coach. Some coaches just don't like to lose *any* game, and usually these hyper-competitive teams are good preseason bets. Bill Parcells, for example, was legendary for his serious approach to preseason games. The coaches that he mentored like the NY Giants' Tom Coughlin have to some extent carried on this legacy. While the "good" preseason coaches are often reflected in the pointspreads assigned to their team, a motivated team is almost always worth a look.

One of the best tools that a handicapper has at his disposal during the preseason is the Internet. Actually, it's a great tool year round but during the preseason it is invaluable. The best source of information on coaching philosophies, game plans, injuries, lineup changes, etc, are the local sports pages of NFL teams. Basically, the situation during preseason is that there is a lot of interest in the team and a lot of anxious beat writers looking to write stories. The problem is that there is little in the way of real news, and for that reason you'll find the sort of minutiae on teams and players from which you can often extract relevant handicapping information. Even if there aren't any nuggets of handicapping gold, you can at least get a feel for the coach's goals for the game and the amount of playing time that key players will see. Sometimes coaches will come right out and say who will play at what juncture of the game, and will occasionally go on record that personnel decisions like evaluating all of the guys they're considering for the backup defensive secondary jobs are more important than winning. Clearly, operating with this knowledge is a distinct advantage and operating without it can be fatal. There's nothing more frustrating than betting on a team only to have them look like they could care less whether or not they win the game. During the preseason, however, it can frequently be prevented with some simple research and analysis.

The bottom line is that while the NFL preseason does offer some solid moneymaking opportunities, its not a 'free cash grab'. It's best viewed as an opportunity to grind out a small profit, but as always its essential to maintain the same degree of discipline in handicapping and money management as at any other time during the pro football season.

The True Story Of The Ali/Inoki Fight

By Ross Everett

While mixed martial arts fighting has only recently become popular in the United States, contests between fighters of different martial arts disciplines have taken place in Japan for many years. They weren't called "mixed martial arts" until recently, but they were definitely an embryonic form of the now booming sport. Many of the most famous events of this type took place in Japan during the'70's involving pro wrestling legend Antonio Inoki.

Inoki would often face other martial artists in fights that are widely accepted to have been "worked" (having a predetermined outcome) in the same manner as professional wrestling matches. While Inoki faced a number of karate, judo and boxing champions his most famous match was certainly his fight against world heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali.

There are differing accounts of how the best heavyweight boxer in history found himself in a ring in Tokyo's Budokan Arena against a pro wrestler. One thing is certain--it was viewed as an easy payday for Ali, who'd lost a good chunk of his prime earning years to his controversial stance over the Vietnam war. That's what got him there in the first place, and that's what kept him there after the two sides began squabbling over the rules and the outcome of the fight. Some suggest that it was supposed to be a "fair fight" going in and once Ali saw Inoki spar he insisted on rules changes to tilt the fight in his favor. Another more likely version of the story suggests that Ali's handlers knew that the fight was supposed to be a "work" all along. They made the deal with Inoki's people based on this fact, and were all on board as to the outcome of the match and how it would "finish". The "original" plan was to have Inoki win in a controversial manner that would keep his undefeated streak in "MMA" matches intact while allowing Ali to "save face. The only person who wasn't aware of the game plan, however, was Ali himself. When informed that he was supposed to "take a dive", even in a convoluted fashion, Ali refused. No agreement was reached between the two camps and at the last minute a legit fight transpired. The promoters were left with a sold out Budokan, a worldwide PPV audience and two fighters who despite every effort to the contrary would actually have to fight each other.

By the time the fight began, Ali's handlers had obtained a ridiculously one sided set of rules that prohibited Inkoi from using a closed fist, striking Ali in the head at all, using any chokes or submissions or even trying to take the fight to the ground. Were it not for the huge amount of money he'd be leaving on the table, Inoki would have been justified in not fighting at all under these highly restrictive and one-sided conditions.

The result was an absolutely horrible fight. Neither man showed much interest in engaging the other, with Inoki spending most of the time on the ground doing what he could under the one sided rules. Inoki threw kicks at Ali's legs, Ali threw an occasional jab and tried to protect himself from his opponent's leg strikes. The fight ended a 74-74 draw, with the real losers being the fans.

Some interesting trivia about the fight--the referee was former pro wrestler "Judo" Gene Labell, who is considered by many 'the baddest man on the planet' even in his 80's. He could have very likely beaten up both men at the same time--a spectacle that might have been welcomed by the live crowd and closed circuit audience worldwide.

The fiasco didn't hurt Inoki's popularity in Japan whatsoever. Oddly, he became something of a hero for trying to take the fight to Ali despite the one sided rules. He would remain one of Japan's most popular pro wrestlers and later serve in the country's parliament. Inoki's fights against other martial artists remained wildly popular, and are often credited as being the forerunner of PRIDE, RINGS and the major MMA organizations in Japan today.

Vertigo Is A Classic Psychological Thriller

By Isaac Perkins

Hitchcock's iconic movie Vertigo is a classic thriller and features lead characters James Stewart and Kim Novak. Vertigo is the kind of movie that you once you have seen you will always remember.

This psychological thriller made in 1958 is based on the original novel by Narcejac and was adapted and written as a screenplay by Tayler and Coppel.

Much of the setting for the movie takes place in northern California from San Francisco to San Juan Bautista and there are many iconic landmarks used in the shoot such as the Golden Gate Bridge, Muir Woods and Coit Tower.

The film's plot is filled with many surprises and moments that will keep you guessing and it is well worth seeing. As a result it has been classed as one of the top hundred movies of all time.

The central protagonist of the movie, Scottie, is a detective who witnesses a traumatic death of his colleague. The image haunts him and this is when his vertigo begins which has symptoms of aversion to heights. He takes early retirement and ends his days as a detective until an old college chum, Gavin, pleads for his help in a private case.

This is the catalyst for the driving force of the movie. Gavin asks Scottie to investigate his wife Madeleine whom he fears is losing her mind. She is obsessed with a dead woman named Carlotta Valdes and reenacts the same journey each day as a kind of pilgrimage to Carlotta.

Scottie spends the day trailing Madeleine, Gavin's wife, and he witnesses her jump into the bay at Fort Point with the Golden Gate looming above her. After he rescues her there is a chemistry between them and Madeleine tells Scottie about her fears of death and a recurring dream with a bell tower in it.

Scottie knows that this is the mission in San Juan Bautista and thinks that she should face her fear. When they arrive Madeleine tears away from his side, runs up the steps to the roof and he is unable to follow because of his vertigo. He hears her scream and is powerless to act.

After her death, he finds it hard to recover. He searches the places they used to visit and one day he meets a Madeleine doppelganger, a young woman named Judy. He is so desperately in love and missing Madeleine that he asks Judy to dress like her. The similarity between them is uncanny.

A twist arises when Carlotta Valdes' necklace is spotted on Judy. Scottie figures out that they are the same and he decides to confront her with the truth.

He plans the showdown at the place where Madeleine faked her death. The mission at San Juan Bautista is the climactic end scene and Scottie uncovers that the whole thing was a plot to murder Gavin's first wife. Madeleine was hired to do this.

They battle it out and a nun steps forward. Judy screams. She falls off the bell tower to her death below. Scottie's vertigo is no more.

This movie is suspenseful and all lovers of thrillers and mysteries will enjoy the nail biting plot that will keep you guessing until the end.

An Intro To The Film "Memento"

By Marva Elliott

Chances are, if you're taking a look into an article like this one, than you are trying to get a better glimpse into the very critically acclaimed and instant classic, "Memento". Sure, there is a good bit to know and to understand about this film, most of which will likely be discussed within this article and the content of its paragraphs.

I suppose that the best way for you to learn anything at all about this film, would be to really take a brief overview of the plot synopsis so that you can best understand the sequence of events that allow this film's climactic points to even be possible. The only trouble with just reading or writing a plot synopsis for this film, is that it follows no feasible chronological order, and therefore it becomes difficult to describe the events of the film.

So for the sake of this article and the explanation of the film itself, you will simply have to excuse the film being described in chronological order, when in all actuality these events are rather spread out through the film in various orders. The reason for this is the very nature of the film, and without it being so sporadic, the film might not have been as good.

There is a very good reason for this sporadic nature to the film, and it is because of the main character in the piece: Leonard Shelby. This man attempted years ago to stop two men from raping and killing his wife. He stopped one by killing him, and the other clubbed him across the head, giving him a condition known as anterograde amnesia, which does not allow him to make new memories.

He is rather taken advantage of in his condition, as several people have allowed him to do their dirty work, giving him ammunition in saying that they had something to do with the killing of his wife. Important information that he collects that is relative to the case is tattooed onto his body, so that he does not forget them.

He receives a phone call from what he believes to be a police officer named John, though he prefers to go by Teddy. He claims that he can take Leonard to the second killer, a drug dealing punk named Jimmy, so that he can exact his revenge. What the audience learns later, is that Jimmy had nothing to do with Lenny's wife. And Teddy feeds Lenny a story about having already found the other killer a year ago.

You meet several people throughout the story, and they all play an intricate role into the very complicated nature of this plot. In the last sections of the film, you deduce along with Leonard who the second killer is, and you accompany him to exact his revenge. Though the film was written very well, you might care to take note of the incredible performances from Guy Pearce (Leonard) and Joe Pantaliano (Teddy).

If you aren't careful, "Memento" could lose you to its sporadic jumping back and forth in how the story progresses. But if you are paying attention, you are likely to see one of the best films to have been released in all of 2000, and likely one of the best of the whole '00s.

A Look At The Film Taxi Driver

By Kurt Peters

Martin Scorsese may well be the greatest living filmmaker. If not, he at least ranks in the top tier of greatest directors of all time. Even when working with the fairly standard biopic genre material of The Aviator, or doing remakes like Cape Fear, he always creates a film that is simply fascinating to behold. When it comes to Taxi Driver, you could watch it on mute and still be intrigued, or with the sound up and your eyes closed, and the movie would remain enchanting.

Not many directors are really as capable as Scorsese when it comes to being able to drag you into a fictional world, to build a whole atmosphere around you. You feel like you're sitting shotgun in Travis Bickle's cab right beside him. It almost feels like a documentary for its sheer realism. It is as close as you can get to "found footage" without some gimmick like having one of the characters hold the camera.

The film stands as the second entry in something of a trilogy of films alongside The Searchers and Paris, Texas. All three films use essentially the same outline for their stories, and both Scorsese's film and Wim Wenders' Paris, Texas are considered loose remakes of The Searchers. The trilogy stands as a testament to how many different ways there are to tell a story, proving that old axiom that a movie isn't about what it's about, it's about how it's about it.

The Searchers is an adventure film rotating around the themes of racism and lonesomeness. Paris, Texas takes a similar story and tells it in a sweet way, focusing on issues of lonesomeness and family, and Scorsese focuses on lonesomeness and the use of violence as a means of personal validation. In all three, the heroes serve as escorts, attempting to rescue people and put them where they need to be, reuniting them with their families, but in all three, the heroes must leave once more in the end, forever alone.

In each film, a real statement on loneliness is made. This is what helps the heroes of these films to be so easy to relate to, even as they do things that most of us would never be proud of having done. Even Travis Bickle, who commits so many acts of grisly violence, is such a human and endearing character in spite of his mental illness, because we know what it is to be that desperate for validation.

Everyone, sooner or later, feels that intense, terrible loneliness. That feeling that, even though you're surrounded by other people, you're trapped in a little bubble and incapable of breaking out and truly connecting with anyone. This is where Travis is stuck in his life, and we know that that can drive a person crazy.

What few people want to discuss, because it involves delving into your own dark side, is the part of us all that roots for Travis in the end of the film. What he does cannot be morally justified, but he does find the validation he was seeking. The tragedy is that morality isn't as simple as Travis makes it out to be.

These three films serve as companion pieces to one another, but Taxi Driver also goes hand in hand with First Blood, which is also about a lonesome Vietnam veteran who uses violence as a way to solve issues of loneliness and seek validation.

Taking to the Ski Slopes this Winter?

By Suzanne Noctor

If you intend to go skiing this winter you must first make sure that you get the right equipment. As well as good clothing you must ensure that you buy a pair of good quality ski boots. However, as there are quite a number of different kinds available it can prove difficult especially if you've never skied before to know which ones will be right for you.

So before you do go out and invest quite a considerable sum of money in your ski boots it is advisable to learn a little more about them. In this article we take a look at just of the things you should know about this item of skiing equipment and which will help you to determine what pair are going to be right for you.

As we stated above the boots one wears when skiing come in several different styles and categorized by the way they are worn, and which we now take a look at below.

1. Rear Entry - These are the style that are perfect for someone who is only just learning to ski. These are the simplest ones to put on and take off and the buckles to tighten them around your leg are at the rear. These boots are the least expensive to buy and make the perfect choice if you won't be skiing on a regular basis. Also it is worth considering if trying skiing for the first time to rent a pair for your trip rather than buying.

2. Front Entry Boots - These boots are worth considering purchasing when you would like to be more in control of your skiing because they allow you to make more precise movements. Also referred to as overlap ski boots these are a pair that skiers opt for who would like to improve their performance and become more versatile in their skiing. Unlike the first boots we discussed these have four buckles to keep the boot in position at the front rather than the rear.

3. Mid Entry Boots - When it comes to these boots for skiing this offer the best of both the boots we mention above. They allow you to easily put them on and take them off as the buckles are at the rear. Plus as with the rear entry boots you will discover that they only come with one or two clips to allow them to remain in place when worn rather than 4 that the front entry style have. However, they allow you much more versatility and help to enhance your skiing performance in exactly the same way as the front entry style does.

For anyone who does intend to do a lot of skiing then they should be considering spending money on a pair of the front or mid entry ski boots. Along with helping to ensure that they can move more easily when skiing they can help them improve what they already know. But it is a good idea before investing money in this crucial piece of skiing equipment one tries out several pairs first to determine which feel most comfortable when being worn.

Apocalypse Now Directed By Francis Ford Coppola

By Dwayne Beach

Francis Ford Coppola is a director who has dabbled a little in every genre, never really settling down, never developing his own "tropes", never becoming predictable. Masters like Martin Scorsese certainly deserve their credit, but watching a Scorsese film, you know you're going to get fast-dolly-in movements, and you're probably going to get some Rolling Stones soundtrack. There are few similarities between Apocalypse Now, Rumble Fish and The Godfather, so with Coppola, you really never know what to expect.

The film is said to be based on the novel Heart of Darkness, and while there are some parallels, it's really nothing like a direct adaptation. The film follows Martin Sheen as Captain Benjamin J. Willard, a veteran secret operatives specialist who, after his last tour of duty, has apparently taken to heavy drinking and grown psychotic in the meantime.

All he wants is to be put back in the field. "Every day, Charlie grows stronger while I grow weaker". He thrives on the blood lust of battle and can't take another day cooped up in this room. The opening scene is immediately gripping, with the choppers flying overhead and Willard simply going insane in a bedroom somewhere in Saigon, waiting for his next mission.

The famous shot of Sheen punching the mirror was not scripted. He really went that crazy. The film is full of scenes and moments that were not scripted, and not just because of Coppola's open attitude towards improvisation. The making of feature on this film is just about as wild and as fascinating as the movie itself, but we've only got time to review one or the other for now...

The movie is loaded from end to end with unforgettable scenes and incredible characters. Before we even get into the main cast, we have Cockroach, who appears for a single scene in the film during a fight over a key bridge in Vietnam. He sleeps through the battle while the others defend, but when a lone V. C. Sits amongst his friends bodies in the dark, shouting insults, Cockroach is awoken, he fires a grenade into the air which arcs perfectly and silences the V. C. Immediately, and then Cockroach goes back to bed. Robert Duvall as Lieutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore is one of the greatest one-scene characters ever, ordering his men to surf while mortar fire hits the waves.

This isn't even getting into the main cast, these characters appear for one scene and then disappear from the film forever. Marlon Brando as Colonel Kurtz doesn't even appear until the very end, but his presence, his mere existence, casts a shadow that commands the entirety of the film, despite his limited screen time, or perhaps, mythologized by his non-presence.

The film works on every level. It's an incredible action film, a fascinating political statement, it's funny, and, at times, it's even endearing. However, while it succeeds on all these levels, the nihilism cast over the film by Kurtz and Willard eventually overwhelms all these other aspects and creates a film that is dark, psychedelic, and a frightening look into the human heart.

While Coppola claims Rumble Fish as the personal favorite amongst his body of work, his fans typically consider it to be between Apocalypse Now and The Godfather Part II. It is, at the very least, his most wild, insane and epic film to date.

The Way To Increase Your Vertical For Bust Dunking

By James Baldwin

In this article I'm going to elucidate how to enhance your vertical for slam dunking. When I played basketball in high-school, one of my largest goals was to slam dunk a basketball. I trained for years and worked my tail off and ended up finally reaching my goal in my third game of senior year. It was a superb sense of achievement and i hope you all will have the opportunity to feel the same.

I'm going to elucidate two parts that your vertical program should have. In vertical jump coaching, the most important thing that you need to target your energies on improving is your power. In simple terms if you can increase your power, you can raise your vertical. Power is made up by two components - strength and speed. This could all be seen through this easy equation :

Power = Strength x Speed

Strength

The amount of force that your body can exert off the ground is decided by your strength. There are many exercises that may increase the power of muscles associated with vertical jumping and dunking. I might advocate using the standard full squat or the split squat to get your lower body muscles stronger. These 2 exercises actually tear up every significant muscle that your body uses to jump high.

Speed

Vertical jumping is not only about how much force you exert off the ground, yet it is also about the velocity at which you exert this force. The more explosive your body is at exerting its force, the higher up you can jump. Target plyometric exercises to increase this such as split squat jumps, tuck jumps, and lateral box jumps.

Important Things to note

The power formula is only one of many aspects that you've got to take under consideration when you are training to enhance your vertical for slam dunking. Other include jumping system, fast twitch development, neuro-muscular connection, and more . Vertical jump programs out today will engulf all these facets and will especially tell you the correct way to train. The reason why I saw the gains that I saw was because on top of training hard, I trained smart. I trained categorical muscles in precise ways that fit my body type. The program I used took advantage of all of these aspects explained.

MMA Flashback: Bobby Lashley Destroys Mike Cook At MFC 21

By Ross Everett

Here's a word of advice to future opponents of Bobby Lashley--don't make fun of his background in professional wrestling. Mike Cook found that out the hard way in the co-main event of the Maximum Fighting Championships MFC 21: Hard Knocks event. After spending the run up to fight week making fun of Lashley's tenure in the WWE, Cook lasted a mere :24 seconds before being choked unconscious via a guillotine choke.

Perhaps Cook felt he was creating some sort of self doubt in the former WWE superstar by suggesting that he was out of his element in a real fight, but he turned it up a notch at the weigh in and in his ring entrance by donning a Mexican Lucha Libre mask. That clearly incensed the massive 64 250 pound Lashley, who despite his inexperience in MMA is hardly the sort of individual prone to losing bowel control at the prospect of a fight.

Even after the opening bell rang, Cooks arrogant approach to the fight continued as he immediately clinched with his opponent as if he had no regard whatsoever for Lashley's strength. Lashley immediately locked in a guillotine choke and basically yanked Cook down to the mat by his head. Once on the canvas, Lashley cinched it in deeper as Cook flopped around"partially in an effort to escape, partially in an involuntary muscle reaction as he sunk into unconsciousness.

After the fight Lashley gave his opponent a hug and flashed his trademark megawatt smile as if to say I told you so. In his postfight interview, however, he did slip in a final verbal jab toward his vanquished opponent saying that he didn't come to play and that he is all business before quipping that now Cook can go put the mask back on and have fun with himself'.

Despite the fact that mixed martial arts and professional wrestling have been interwoven from the beginning, the American Top Team trained Lashley has been singled out by less knowledgeable fans for his tenure in the WWE. Against his next opponent, Bob Sapp, hell be facing a foe that has also spent some time in the worked environment of professional wrestling. In addition to his legit fighting experience in K-1 and PRIDE, Sapp has worked for several Japanese pro wrestling organizations and briefly held the prestigious IWGP Championship. The IWGP title has been held by pro wrestling legends such as Keiji The Great Muta Mutoh, Antonio Inoki and Tatsumi Fujinami, as well as reigning UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar.

Even though Sapp's days as a serious fighter are long past and he likely spends less time in the gym during a given year than Lashley does in a month, he does present an element of danger. Hes still got decent punching power, and his sheer bulk will be a challenge for Lashley who could give up as much as 100 pounds come fight night. Still, Sapp's only victories in several years have been against overmatched and/or outsized opponents. In his last fight against an opponent of similar stature he was destroyed in under a minute by Jan Nortje who entered the matchup with a 1-6 career MMA record. Sapp remains a hugely popular personality in Japan, however, and simply by fighting him Lashley's marketability in the lucrative Japanese fight sport market increases significantly.

Bengals Blast Struggling Bears

By Ross Everett

Former Chicago Bears running back Cedric Benson got revenge on the team that let him go in the best possible way. Benson amassed 189 yards rushing and led his new team, the Cincinnati Bengals, to a 45-10 rout over the visiting Bears on Sunday. Carson Palmer threw for five touchdowns with no interceptions in the blowout victory. Cincinnati improved to 5-2 with the win while Chicago dropped to 3-3 on the NFL season.

The Bengals also made short work of the NFL pointspread, easily covering as +1' home underdogs. Cincinnati improved to 4-3 against the number while Chicago evened their ATS mark at 3-3. The 55 combined points sailed OVER the posted total of 42'.

A smug Benson described his feelings after the win:

"Everybody knew it was going to be an emotional day. Everybody knew. What a wonderful day and a wonderful thing, to go out there and strut your stuff."

Despite the evidence to the contrary, Benson downplayed the motive of revenge:

"I continue to be as graceful as I can be. I'm not shoving anything in anybody's face. Like I say, it wasn't a revenge day for me. I just wanted to take advantage of the opportunities."

He said his biggest problem was trying to keep his emotions in check:

"There were a few times where I may have gotten a little too hyped up, a little too antsy. A couple of drives, I found myself having to calm myself down and gather my emotions to stay poised. Once I got past that, we were good to go. Keep it rolling."

Bengals' receiver Chad Ochocinco had 10 catches for 118 yards and two touchdowns. He shared his thoughts postgame:

"I don't understand why it went this way today and why it didn't go that way last week or the week before that. The offensive line played unbelievable. For Ced to run the way he did today and for us to be able to throw, we could have done what we wanted to do."

Chicago gave up more points than in any game all season, a fact that left defensive end Alex Brown looking for answers:

"That was pretty embarrassing. It's embarrassing to come out and play like that. I tip my hat to their whole team. Cedric ran the ball like crazy. They did whatever they wanted to do."

The Bengals will enjoy a bye week before hosting the Baltimore Ravens on November 8. They'll then play two games on the road at Pittsburgh and Oakland. Chicago will try to get back on track this Sunday as they host the Cleveland Browns. The Bears are -13' home favorites with the total set at 40.

Kobe, Iverson Miss NBA All Star Game

By Ross Everett

The NBA All Star game was played without a couple of high profile participants this year as the Los Angeles Lakers' Kobe Bryant and Philadelphia 76ers' Allen Iverson would not play due to injury. Kobe and 'AI' were the latest in a string of injuries to All Star players that also claimed Portland's Brandon Roy and New Orleans' Chris Paul. The NBA has been much more strict about missing the All Star game after many players would come up with illusory 'injuries' right before the game that miraculously healed before play resumed after the break.

Kobe Bryant has been plagued with minor injuries all year, but missed the Lakers' last three games prior to the All Star contest due to an ankle sprain. Los Angeles is hopeful that by not playing in the game that Kobe will be able to return to action immediately after play resumes following the All Star break. Bryant did travel to Dallas to participate in All Star game festivities.

Iverson has missed Philadelphia's past five games due to an illness suffered by one of his young children. Unlike Kobe, Iverson wasn't expected to be in Dallas this weekend due to the nature of his situation. It's debatable that Iverson deserved an All Star game nod in the first place. He quickly wore out his welcome in Memphis to start the year, and eventually landed back in Philadelphia where he's averaged 14.4 points per game since his return. He was voted in to the starting lineup by NBA fans, and this renewed calls from the media to revise the procedure for selecting All Star game participants. Many would be pleased if the fans were taken out of the process of selecting the starting lineup altogether.

Jason Kidd of the Dallas Mavericks was chosen to replace Bryant in the Western Conference lineup, while New York's David Lee was the East's fill in for Iverson. The West already had two 'fill ins' named to their roster as Denver's Chauncy Billups and the LA Clippers' Chris Kaman took the place of Chris Paul and Brandon Roy respectively.

NBA betting enthusiasts had several options on the menu beginning with the annual 'rookies vs. sophomores' game on Saturday. The Sophomores were a -12 point favorite with the total set at 245' but were crushed by the rookie team. This year's game in Dallas set an all time record for All Star game attendance.

Travel Guide To Cardiff

By Ramon Van Meer

A town of confidence, Cardiff is a city designed by the wealthiest man in the 19th century, the third marquess of Bute, John Patrick Crichton-Stuart. He made a legacy of great architecture which are visible in the Cardiff Castle and the Civic Center. While preserving this legacy undamaged, this city is slowly changing itself and going with the twenty-first century.

The Cardiff Castle had been once a spot of medieval ruins that the Bute family transformed into landscaped grounds and kitsch. This family was also accountable in making Cardiff the world's biggest coal port. In line with this, they also acquired the Pierhead Building constructed. It is a red-colored brick French Gothic Renaissance building that has been built to stir maritime traffic. You may also see the Llandaff Cathedral, another 1 of the renowned architectural sites in Cardiff. It's a lovely church built on the area of a monastery set up by St. Tielo. The symbol and center of the regrowth of Cardiff Bay is the Wales Millennium Centre. It is deemed an architectural work of art of different colors of stacked Welsh slate and a bronzed steel shell.

The Coal Exchange was the center of the Welsh coal trade. In 1908, the 1st check for one million pounds had been prepared by a coal merchant. Nowadays, arts and performances tend to be situated and hosted in this building. Caf and outlets are located in the harbor of Cardiff at the Mermain Quay. Throughout the Cardiff Festival, a carnival happens here and samba bands and dance troupes are plentiful. This is the great place for shopping and having a leisurely stroll. Remember to see the Goleulong 2000 Lightship. That is found close to the Norwegian Church on the harbor. It houses the Christian center where you can locate a bookshop, caf as well as exhibitions. You can even see the small cabins and climb the lighthouse to get a sight of Cardiff.

Above the shopping street in the city center is the Gothic lantern tower of the Church of St. John the Baptist. It is a 15th century parish which exhibits stonework on the exterior that is so sensitive you would think it was filigree. Elegant arches enhance the inside of the church and this is a terrific place to acquire some quiet moment from the busyness of the street.
