Necessary Concerns To Do With Hotels Health & Safety

By Mayra Horn

Staying in a cheap hotel London does not mean sacrificing your personal safety. There are features that you should look for when deciding where to stay. Once you are booked in, there are things you can do to to stay safe.

Security is the process of protecting the property and possessions of both the kings cross hotel and its guests. Safety, on the other hand, is a matter of protecting people. Three broad aspects of safety are access, fire and equipment.

Fire safety includes prevention, early notification of guests in the event of an actual fire and ease and speed of safe evacuation if necessary. Both the hotel management and the guests share responsibility. The hotel should provide smoke alarms and make sure they are regularly tested. The alarm system should also be tested regularly and allow rapid identification of where a fire is located. Other equipment that should be provided by the hotel are fire extinguishers, sprinklers and fire hoses. They are also responsible for making sure exits are clearly identified and free from obstruction or flammable materials. They should prominently post instructions for evacuation.

The hotel guest can do their part, as well, when it comes to fire safety. They should not keep flammable materials in their rooms. They should read, understand and, if necessary, follow instructions about triggering alarms if they see a fire and make themselves aware of evacuation instructions and the locations of fire exits.

The hotel management should also ensure that guests can securely lock their doors from the inside to keep out intruders. A lot of larger hotels have electronic locks on the guest doors. Where these are not available, doors should have strong deadbolts or chains on the inner side. Peep holes should also be on the doors so that guests may identify people who want to get their attention. They can also make the room seem occupied when they are away by leaving lights and televisions or radios on. Not flagging up an empty room by putting the 'please clean room' sign on the doorknob while they are out is also a good idea.

To keep guests from injuring themselves inside their rooms, the hotel should make sure that all electrical equipment is tested regularly. This includes mini bar fridges, light fixtures, trouser presses and irons, lamps, television sets and hair dryers. Power cords should be routinely inspected for wear and tear. The onus is on the guest to use all equipment appropriately and to inform the hotel staff if anything requires attention.

While hotels shoulder a great deal of responsibility in keeping their guests safe, there are a lot of things the guests can do as well. People should not flash large amounts of cash or expensive jewellery. Lock valuables in a safe at reception or a room safe. The best floors to book a room are the fourth, fifth and sixth. These are not on the ground, where they are accessible by potential thieves, but they are easily accessible to firefighters.

Children should never be left either alone in the guest room or unsupervised in common areas, not even for a moment. Women should avoid walking around by themselves after dark. By working together in partnership, tourists and cheap hotels London can keep everybody safe.
