A Compiled Piece On Yacht Transport

By John Patterson

As a sailboat owner, you will want your possession to be shipped to the wanted terminal with all the services known. There are some aspects that you need to deliberate on when it comes to yacht transport. Opting for transit has some benefits which include trimming down the expenditure, shortening the duration to be used. It also eliminates any risky sea crossing.

You should fully check the company that you want to do the shipping. This is because there are a lot of fraudsters in the market offering the services. They do not have the knowledge, materials or the vessel itself for efficient transit. They can ask for the whole freight charges but then do not ship the cargo. You might lose your money together with the cargo which will be cumbersome and costly to retrieve.

There is a customs clearance document that you need to have for the process to continue. The process will require a copy of your passport, a commercial invoice and a certificate of registry. If you have no idea of how it is done, port officials are available that will help you with the clearance.

Make sure that the company is insured. This is because even when perfect preparations are done, there could be damages. Your cargo should also be insured against all risks. There can be damages from accidents. It is wise to always take pictures of a sailboat before loading the interior and exterior. In the event of damages, you will have proof that your sailboat was perfectly fine before loading.

Inquire about any extra operational charges. There are charges for loading and discharging that you wish to make which are within the freight rates. There will also be cradling and crane charges that need to be paid. It is important for you to know them so that you can pay them at a go.

The corporation should tell you the delivery time and the cancellation dates. There is normally a projected delivery duration that the companies give rather than specific dates. The projection is due to the changing weather patterns and the delays at the port which can be present anytime. The corporation, however, should give you a realistic time frame. The cancellation dates are visibly indicated in the agreement.

When you want to be in your vessel during transit, you should alert the corporation so that they give you permission. Mostly, the loading dates will vary forcing you to be adaptable with any date they will give you. Whenever asked for the density and measurements of a cargo, give an honest answer because they are needed for loading purposes. Giving wrong information can endanger the crew.

You need to prepare the sailing boat before transit. You should keep safe all the items inside, lock all the windows and tape with a locking device. The electrical circuits and batteries must be disconnected. Do not forget to lock the doors and drawers since in case any item goes missing the company will not accept liability. Any fuel and water should be removed for the safety of the crew.
