Africa is a continent that is known to be home to diverse cultures and traditions. The north is Muslim dominated while the south has a significant Christian population. For many centuries, this diversity has seen many historic sites and rites preserved. One unique part of the continent is East Africa. You will be amazed at the many things you can learn from a simple historical Ethiopia tour.

Ethiopia is a country that has managed to hold on to its ancient past despite the sweeping effects of modernity. Its roots trace as far back as the bible. Besides this, many historians consider it the cradle of mankind. This is because human fossils that date back millions of years have been found within its confines.

Tourists often feel surprised by the numerous interesting travel spots present upon landing. There are a plethora of historically significant sites all over, from the north right down to the southern border with Kenya. The sites you visit can give you an overview of how man has evolved and the traditions followed by the inhabitants residing within the vast land.

The first place you might want to tour is Addis Ababa. This is the capital city of the country. If you are jetting in, it is certainly the first place you will land in. The city can offer lots of insight on the history of the nation. It has got a national museum that details the history of civilization in the country, human evolution and its leadership.

The burial site of Emperor Haile Selassie lies within the Trinity Cathedral. Much of Ethiopian and Rastafarian culture can be tied to the emperor. He largely became famous for his contribution to Ethiopian independence by leading a resistance against Italian conquest during the struggle by European nations to partition Africa. There are many city streets that bear his name in Africa.

One popular destination for tourists is Bahar Dar. Its fame is due to the numerous wonders located within it. Lake Tana, whose waters primarily feed the Blue Nile, is located here. It is also home to a host of ancient monasteries. If religious history is your thing, you should certainly include the destination in your travel plan.

Another location of significance is Gondar. Once you get to the area, you may pay a visit to the ancient ruins of Kuskuam. The buildings, now in ruins, were built for the Ethiopian Empress Mentewab in the 1700s. The Royal Enclosure within the area was designated a world heritage site by UNESCO. It contains a total of five castles built by Ethiopian kings in succession during the 1700s.

Your trip will be incomplete without a visit to Axum. With its historical significance, the ancient Axumite Empire used it as its capital. Today, it is a protected site in accordance with UNESCO designations. The 2000 year old Stelae fields located around the area still stand strong.

Your tour should come to an end at Lalibela. The area is home to Mount Asheton monastery. Constructed in the 1200s, the monastery primarily consists of carved rocks. There are flights available to Addis Ababa from Lalibela.
