A Comprehensive Look At Fishing BC

By Elizabeth Bennett

When it comes to choosing the best way to spend leisure time, there are several activities that come to mind. One great way to spend your day in peace and tranquility is to go fishing BC. Situated in the very heart of Canada, the area is renowned for its large amounts of exotic freshwater fish.

To help preserve sustainable populations of fish in the water, authorities require all anglers to abide by certain rules. The rules are also aimed at promoting water safety and conserving the general environment. Regulations are always published after every two years and made available to the public over the internet.

The first key regulation is that all anglers ought to have valid licenses. However, locals are usually exempted from this rule. If visiting the place for the first time, the first point of contact for licensing is the local administration. Licenses are mandatory for anglers who are sixteen years of age and above. There are occasional patrols by authorities to search for those angling without licenses.

There are two ways you can get access to a license. The first way involves contacting the relevant authorities through the internet. These days, the entire licensing process is hassle free as one is permitted to make payments using a credit card. Secondly, you may choose to purchase a license outright from an authorized vendor.

There is no doubt that British Columbia is a big jurisdiction. For this reason, angling rules vary from place to place. The rules in a certain region may be more stringent than those in other regions. However, there are generalized regulations for tidal water angling. If you are bound to be in such a place, you will have to obtain your license via the national fisheries administration.

Regulations basically cover aspects such as protected species, equipment used, prohibited methods and the vessels used. It is no secret that in any country, there are species that are endangered. In this case, there are strict rules that cover the angling of overfished species such as salmon. Other species that many people like to go for include crustaceans, mollusks and shellfish.

You should also keep close watch on the size of your catch. Ensure you are careful enough not to surpass your allowed quota. Doing so may land you in trouble in the form of jail time or a hefty fine. Another common form of punishment is a lifetime ban on angling.

The method used to fish is also an important regulation to watch out for. To avoid any violation, ensure you go through the rules in advance. Certain equipment, vessels and methods are known to endanger fish populations and their usage is largely restricted. Examples of vessels that may cause you problems are large commercial trawlers.

Once you get issued with your license, all you should do is get down to your activity in peace. Licensing would be easier to obtain with a computer connected to the internet and a printer at home. You will get an angler number as soon as your payment goes through. The number uniquely identifies you to authorities. If you forget it, you can get help from dedicated personnel online.
