It cannot be denied that once you mentioned the City of Hoquiam, it will give you the idea about the fine woods that grew abundantly thus Hoquiam had been branded as the land of fine woods since time immemorial. These rich natural resources then became the major way of living in the community itself.

Real estate development took place anywhere which added to the profit specifically the Polsons. Indirectly, the town grew up to its own when men came pouring to the place to work in the logging camps thus the little town became a city. Hoquiam WA had developed its own name so the story goes through hard labor and perseverance of the proud people of Hoquiam WA.

The abundant forest of Hoquiam became the main source of livelihood for the people. This became their noble profession by giving quality services when it comes to woodworks. Many businessmen poured into this simple little town and established large number of saw mills and lumber concessions. Due to this, many men poured in to work to earn a living including their families.

The brothers Robert and Joseph Lytle were among the lumber magnates who had invested in Hoquiam in 1902 who later on became the world's largest cedar shingle manufacturing company. The following year became more profitable to the investors and the populace when another lumber concession surfaced namely the Grays Harbor Lumber Company and became the supplier of railroad projects of the Northern Railroad Company.

The Polson's Family was one among those who became more powerful in this venture. They have put up two (2) sawmills and one (1) shingle mill. In fact, they had built 2 grand mansions in the area one of which was preserved as the Polson museum and was made as National Registries Historical Place. The Polson's likewise had acquired 2o logging camps and construction camps, 100 miles of railroad and a vast series of valuable logging equipments than can produce 300 million feet of logs every year. Alex Polson then made Hoquiam his home since then. Soaring high in the lumber and logging business, they expanded further in real estate business.

In 1891, the lumber barons came into an agreement to merge their logging business between the Lytle Brothers and the Polson Brothers Logging Company. After twelve consecutive years, Merrill and Ring Corporation also affiliated with them making a one big powerful logging concession in the name of Polson Logging Company.

It was the ever powerful Polsons family who had huge control in the logging concession in Hoquiam and Grays Harbor region though about 300 small time operators still existed massively which is a clear indication of how rich and abundant are the forests in the Grays Harbor area.

The history of Hoquiam is indeed worth reading and very inspiring to those who have deep sentiments when it comes to their heritage and history. This place is certainly worth visiting, and exploring so that you can imbibe on the deep historical culture of the place.

Hoquiam's residents with their passion for things that get people to be in touch with their history and reminiscences easily fell in love with Bluegrass music. Hoquiam Olympic Stadium - A symbol of Hoquiam's sense of camaraderie!

The community of Hoquiam has always been very showy of their heritage and rightly so because the people have always thought of themselves as hard working people who try their very best in almost everything they do and this has been true for almost all of their generations that call the Grays Harbor area at heir home. A part of this great heritage is the Olympic Stadium, no other place or building in all of Hoquiam can lay claim to what it stands for and what it stood for in all its years and that is it is for everyone and anyone who wish to stand for something together or make a stand in what they believe is the better in the contest of life, just like the games that are played within the stadium walls hundreds of times over.

The stadium opened its shingled external walls in 1938. The all-wood stadium seemed to be a daunting task if it was done by others but for this city that wood built from the ground up there was really no other building material that will share and display to the nation and to the world their abundance and mastery of lumber. It has been and still is a logging town, established in the 1850's the term "Hoquiam" translates from Native American tongue as "hungry for wood" for the towns namesake the river Hoquiam had this natural propensity to gather driftwood.

The plans for the stadium was laid out in the most at the start of the 1930's and the City went ahead with this and requested for a civil works administration grant for their dream stadium. A stadium that would attest to the nation and the world that despite all odds the people of this city will persevere, the grant was approved in 1932, but the building did not start until 6 years later and within the year groundbreaking started in early 1938 there was no stopping this monumental task, within a year of starting construction the Olympic Stadium was completed.

The stadium officially opened for use by the public on November 24, 1938 with the construction itself not taking more than a year from start to finish and this is their take on things much like how the lumber industry takes time to let trees grow for decades, to agree that everything is right or satisfactory and when the time has come it takes but a moment to finish what took decades or even more than a century to nurture and give life to, such are the circumstances there, the patience and understanding of a tree farmer that completes his task as a lumberjack with a razor sharp axe.

In 2005, again after much time has passed a local man, Congressman Norm Dicks prodded by his community constituents was able to secure through request a renovation grant that was awarded through the "Save America's Treasures" program. The good Congressman also supported the State Historic Preservation Office request to recognize the stadium as a National Registry of Historical Places grantee, which the old stadium got in 2006.

The Olympic stadium was built to last more than a hundred years and it is just a few decades shy of that milestone. The residents who administered the construction knew their business and their business was wood and the all-wood stadium got the strongest and best of what the lumberjacks can take from nature. The lumber used was from ancient fir heavy-timber and the shingles that protected the outside walls were taken from cedar trees. The seats also made of wood are a testament to the quality of the lumber used for they are in remarkable shape.

The Olympic stadium is presently home to the semi-professional football team the Grays Harbor Bearcats. In the 1990's the historic stadium was the base of operations for the now defunct Grays Harbor Gulls of the independent Western baseball League. This is testament to the resilience of the stadium and its continued contribution to the prestige and honor of the town and its people.

The stadium can hold ten thousand fans within its stands and it host a lot of games in from both professional and local amateur teams, the town evidently loves sports and this shows with the number of teams it plays in as many events. Aside from the semi-pro Bearcats football team, there's the city High School football team, Youth Baseball team, the Youth football and many more. It also serves the City of Hoquiam as its community center for bigger annual events.

Unusual Hotels Not For The Faint of Heart

Most people hunting for a hotel are looking for a warm cozy comfy bed for the night in an air conditioned room. Hopefully something with a pool and hot tub if you are going to be there for a while. But for those willing to try something a little different here are some odd hotels and hostels you may want to consider. Beware some of these locations are not for the faint of heart.

First on today's list is the Woodpecker Hotel, a Swedish bed and breakfast set 13 meters above a Swedish public park. Certainly a quaint setting and a cute building but the rope ladder only access implies that a stay at the Woodpecker Hotel is better suited for those who are young at heart. It is also better suited for those who pack light. It is unlikely you will find a porter there to scale the rope ladder with your suitcases in hand. Now try not to imagine being the lucky visitors who pay to sleep in a tree house during a thunder storm and you should have a pleasant stay.

Next from the Netherlands we have a bed and breakfast known as the Capsule Hotel. Care to sleep in your own survival pod in one of the city docks? These bright orange survival pods built in 1972 were originally in service on an oil rig platform. They are apparently unaltered except for essential additions such as a lock on the door and an emergency chemical toilet inside. Being locked in a 4.25 meter diameter bright orange capsule and sleeping next to a chemical toilet sure does scream romance and luxury but then it suited James Bond just fine in The Spy Who Loved Me. Perhaps this is a bed and breakfast better suited to those looking for a 007 themed vacation.

If sleeping on the water isn't adventurous enough for you next we have Sweden's Utter Inn. This unique bed and breakfast is a floating underwater hotel and aquarium. The hotel features one room with twin beds and a table located three meters below the surface of Lake Malaren in Vasteras and is surrounded by large windows that provide a panoramic underwater view of the lake. Not everyone would feel comfortable being left alone and isolated a little more than a half a mile from the shore left with only their luggage, an inflatable boat, and supper if it was ordered. Certainly scenic and potentially quite the romantic getaway. Best leave your gadgets at home though. It is doubtful this hotel offers free wifi.

A far cry from boating out to an underwater hotel the Jules Undersea Lodge in Key Largo, Florida has an entrance twenty-one feet beneath the surface of the sea. Originally the Jules Undersea Lodge was known as the La Chalupa underwater research laboratory. This is another of those locations where it's best to pack light. In a reversal of fate the fish will be looking in the window at you as they swim by while you are the guest in this small aquarium beneath the sea. The Jules Lodge offers a remarkable experience but not in the most convenient location. Remember not to forget anything when you leave your room for the day. You do not want to have to dive twenty-one feet because you forgot your car keys or someone forgot their earrings.

Next in the list of remarkable novelty hotels is the Sala Silver mine. Above ground they offer a hostel centrally located in the mining area. Below ground they offer the mine suite one hundred fifty-five meters under ground. It may be hard for some to imagine sleeping deep underground in a cave with stone walls and nothing between you and subterranean bugs but your slippers. Even less appealing for the pampered vacationers is the lone toilet fifty meters from the banquet hall which lies next to the underground suite for two. Or having to tread above ground to the hostel to hit the showers. For those into a more rugged vacation the Sala Silver mine underground suite could be among the most unique and enchanting stays of your life.

If however you are looking for something a little more quaint and a little less out of the way head back over to the states to Cottonwood Idaho for the Dog Bark Park Inn bed and breakfast for a good sleep in a giant beagle. This one isn't as noisy as the real thing. Still this may leave many wondering what's next, a getaway in Monty Python's giant wooden rabbit? Or badger? Still this two story beagle and nice wooden deck should provide a comfortable and private stay. Try having a lovely picnic at the giant red fire hydrant or have a look at the owners collection of chainsaw dog carvings. While definitely quaint there is one thing a little odd not just about sleeping in a giant beagle but in entering at its rear end. Perhaps not the most dignified entrance to your accommodations but certainly an unusual and memorable place to stay.

This last one is for all the Super Mario fans out there. Ottensheim Austria's Das Park Hotel bed and breakfast. One of the few places in the world you can and would pay to sleep in a giant sewage pipe. The big round door on the pipes almost makes one think of Bilbo Baggins house but there are no hobbits here and there are no plumbers and piranha plants to worry about during your stay in these new, not used, sewage pipes. The concept is apparently going very well and there may be more of these cropping up as time goes on.

These are just a few of the worlds unique and unusual accommodations but a visit to any one of these would be a fantastic idea for any vacation.

The General in charge does not believe this to be a wise decision at first, realizing his troops that would be assigned such a duty would be far underpowered in comparisons to the enemy. However, the General above him makes the suggestion that such a victory would guarantee a promotion in rank, and suddenly the task becomes far less impossible.

The film takes a subtle, and realistic by today's standards, approach to the telling of a war story. The characters drive the plot forward without prompt from the external enemy, but rather from the inhumane judgments and justifications of their own seats of power. A depth exists in every private, general, and rank in between, along with the interactions between them. This is why the movie is a popular choice for teachers to assign their students to analyze and write about it for critical thinking.

The attack is inevitably a failure, as every character besides the delusional generals fueled by arrogance sees coming, and the remaining troops who refuse to leave the trenches for a lost battle are blamed. The entire regiment takes the fall for the loss, and three men are selected at random to punish the entire group of soldiers for their supposed cowardice. Colonel Dax, the man in charge of the regiment, tries to defend his soldiers at any cost against the unfair trial, but has little hope against the united forces against him.

What may stand out to today's audiences that may not have captured so much attention at the time is the physical motion and gesticulation the characters perform throughout the film. To create diversity in the way scenes were shot without a large budget, a single camera would often track the pacing of a character during thought or speech about the set. This pacing punctuates the mental process the actor is portraying, and keeps the audience moving with them, although the camera is set from a single point.

By following the story of three soldiers doomed to death by their superiors for unjust causes, the French and many other European countries banned the movie for many years before cultural policies on such material loosened. Film critics acclaim it as the first challenger to the idea that war is completely honorable and glorious. The ironic and emotional journey the plot takes leave audiences with both warnings and questions about those in power, and the motives behind making enemies out of those who should be allies.

Paths of Glory was highly critically acclaimed, though its box office profits were minimal. The moral behind the story lingers on with relevance as questions of human sacrifice for the sake of political war is more heavily disdained as generations pass. The City of Hoquiam is synonymous with the word wood and no one can contest that truth. It is one of the most well studied and well documented logging towns that ever existed and even until today the heritage and history of this town and its proud people is etched in wood, hard wood.

Even the name of the camp was about the business of wood and surprisingly the term Hoquiam came from people who came before the woodsmen, the Native Americans described how they saw the river hundreds if not thousands of years into their generations "Hungry for wood" and as they so eloquently put it, the arrival of these white men signaled that the river and the just newly established settlement would be infinitely hungrier than ever before.

It was just a matter of time for other people who wanted to cash in on the abundance of commercially viable forest and in just a few years a large number of saw mills were busily processing wood into their hungry jaws, making the area a good employment center and business opportunity for those who wanted to provide goods and services to the lumber men and their families who continually poured in to work in the mills and in the logging camps. Some men went in with big capital like Robert and Joseph Lytle who set up the Lumber and Shingle Company in 1902. By 1906 the Lytle brothers ran of the world's largest cedar shingle manufacturing company. A year later the lumber requirements of the then Northern Pacific Railroad Company brought forth the establishment of the Grays Harbor Lumber Company who made it its business to have a steady supply of lumber for its railroad projects.

As rich and powerful were the Lytle brothers and the other companies who were subsidiaries of even bigger companies in other industries, none can match the tenacity and unrelenting growth of Alex Polson and his brothers. In just a few years, the Polson's controlled if not owned much of the prime real estate and timber interest in and around Grays Harbor area, with opulent mansions and thousands of employees to prove that they were the biggest.

In 1891, the Lytle brothers Joseph and Robert joined their interest with the Polson Brothers Logging Company, which 12 years later after joining again with another big player the Merill and Ring Corporation was established as the Polson Logging Company, a true industrial giant of that era.

The lumber barons had it all, but the richness of the lands of Grays Harbor was so vast that there was room for everybody to try and make a profit. More than 300 other small logging and milling operations dotted the Grays harbor landscape and even hundreds more of different trade and service type concerns were establish to support the thousands of men who needed anything and everything under the sun.

Logging gave birth, sustained and established the town. The people because of the usual influx of visitors and outsiders being employed by the lumber industry became a very accommodating and affable bunch. Most of the present residents can trace their roots from entrepreneurs, mill and logging workers who were employed by the many logging businesses. Present life was dictated by the lumber business and how people interacted with each other in the everyday goings on in the lumber camps and town. The rich history and proud heritage is sourced from these courageous and tenacious men and women who were led by the lumber barons of yesteryear. It is this same tenacity and courage that drives present day Hoquiam to face its future in the years ahead.

A Brief Synopsis Of The Thrilling Spy Film Movie North By Northwest

Alfie Hitchcock is always remembered as the premier master of suspense, the undefeated master of the plot twist. Yes, he was all that, but he was also much more. He pioneered just about ever genre of modern film. He created the slasher film with Psycho, and in North by Northwest, he essentially created the first all-action blockbuster.

Everyone has seen the whole airplane chase, or at least a spoof of it, and while that's truly an incredible scene, it's only one incredible scene out of several. You rarely see referenced the shootout on the face of Mount Rushmore, nor do you see referenced one of the most inventive car chases ever, wherein Cary Grant has been fed an entire bottle of whiskey and is now being forced to flee the baddies in a car with no brakes.

Modern action films rarely show this much imagination. There are a few exceptions, the Crank films, some of the work of the Hong Kong masters of action, but after seeing Cary Grant in a drunken car chase, it's hard to get excited at a muscle car running through a fruit stand for the millionth time, or the hero running amok with a machine gun in either hand.

What this film has that most modern action films lack is context. When there's a shootout, it's not just any shootout, it's a shootout on the face of Mount Everest, so the action is complicated by the fear of falling. When Grant is chased into the crops, the biplane starts dusting them with pesticide, compromising his hiding place.

It was never enough for Hitchcock to just put the hero up against some badguys with guns, he had to put his heroes between a rock and a hard place, into situations where anything they could do to solve one problem would only lead to other problems. This made for better stories and better action.

It's too bad that most people who make action films these days have copied Hitchcock's tropes and turned it into a formula, rather than actually looking at how and why it worked and tried making their own stories from there, coming up with new and fresher ideas.

This film, in addition to some great action, also has one of the all time great love scenes. When the hero and heroine embrace, we cut to a train going through a tunnel. The directness of this scene had Hitch saying "What's the big deal? I already did that!" when the X rated movies got big in the seventies.

If you haven't yet, see it. It remains startlingly relevant and exciting all these years later, and makes a perfect antidote to the big budget blockbusters that have the scale and scope of North by Northwest, but not the style.
