When To Pay For A Date

By Betsy Anderson

Money plays a vital role in a relationship. Thus, it would be good for couples to settle the issue as early as possible to avoid conflict in the future. If you are already halfway into the relationship and have not done any discussion on the matter yet, then try to recall the first date you had and ask yourself, who paid for dinner or lunch, movies, taxi and others.

In the past, there was no question. It was always the man who paid for the first date. In fact, the man paid for most of the things, if not all of the things. This was the tradition then.

Today, times have changed, practically everything have changed. It is already acceptable to find women who ask men to go out on a date. So, the rule that man pays for dates is no longer a standard rule for all.

Oh, not all women are modern though. There are still the traditionalists who believe that men should pay for dates and there are many men who won't let a woman pay for a date. On your end, to clear up things, it is probably a good idea to ask your date what his beliefs on these matters are.

Try to be sensitive on how the date was asked. For example, if you were approached by a young man and asked, "May I have the honour of getting you dinner and bringing you to dancing."

Even in this modern era, finding a man who still wants to take charge of the date even if it was the woman who asked him out is pretty cool. So, if you asked him out and at the end of the date he wants to pay for the bill, then let him.

This would be the best occasion for you to ask her to give you the chance to pay back the kindness by letting you see her again on another date. If she denies, you may offer to pay 50/50 so that she will not be burdened by the expense.

Clearly, the modern way of dating is completely different from the traditional one even on the aspect of who pays for the date. Due to this uncertainty, it is often better to get this issue straightened as early as possible so that you will not be bother by this and you can focus on enjoying yourselves.
