Points To Consider When Purchasing Pepper Spray

By Mike Ward

These days it is good to have a self-defense tool or skill. There are so many options out there which you can go for. However pepper spray has proved to be a favorite for many. The spray is almost similar to teargas and can help you stop attacks from people or animals. The spray is also helpful to the police since it contains a UV dye. This means it can be used to identify suspects who manage to flee.

Since there are many pepper spray brands in the market, one should consider various factors before purchase. The first one is the concentration. Although this does not necessarily deter the effectiveness of the product, it influences the legality of the product you go for. You should therefore check what level is allowed in your area first.

If you want to determine the effectiveness of the product, you should consider the scoville heat units. This is the formula used to determine the hotness of the product with regard to the amount of capsaicin in the spray. The SHU percentage should help you compare different products better.

Another important area that should not be ignored is the actual effect of the spray on the attacker. With the spray being an inflammatory agent, it causes immediate closure of the eyes when it comes into contact with the face of the attacker. It also leads to overproduction of tears. When considering the effect, one should therefore consider how long it takes the attacker to recover. Some sprays provide a period of 15 minutes while other can give you up to 1 hour.

While considering the effect, it is good to note that unlike most other self defense products sold in the market, this spray is non-lethal. This means it does not induce extreme effects such as breathing problems or lead to death as other products do.

The device in which the the spray is provided in is also an important consideration. You can make your choice from a wide variety including key chains, stand aerosol cans and lipstick. Your choice device should be determined by the situation you are most likely to find yourself in.

Apart from this, the device also determines the range of the spray. Most of the containers available provide a short range with the longest range being around thirteen feet. Since this might not be sufficient for an outdoor person who might face animal attacks, a better choice would be a paint ball-style gun. This will give one a safer distance to deter the animal. All these factors show that proper research is necessary before purchasing pepper spray.
