Around half the Caribbean island of Saint Martin is taken up by St. Maarten. While the size of this area is relatively small, it is big on tourists and attracts many to visit annually. Those that arrive can take their choice of a extensive range of St Maarten activities to ensure they have a time to remember.

Its island setting means that water plays a big part in the pastimes that locals and tourist can enjoy. Dipping your toes in the Caribbean is easy to do at the many beaches around the coast and tranquil waters at a number of locations are ideal for swimming. It is easy for those that want something a little more energetic to find this, with some of the water fun available including kite surfing, stand-up paddle boards and canoeing.

Getting out on the water is also relatively easy to do and this provides the chance to try scuba diving. There are a number of diving clubs on the island and these will take novice and experienced divers to a number of sites around the coastline. Anyone that gets in the water has the chance to see some of the local marine line such as rays, crabs, and turtles. There is also the chance to visit a shipwreck or find some brightly colored shells.

The waters around St. Maarten are teeming with fish and there are a number of operators that take advantage of this by offering a deep sea fishing experience. Visitors that set sail on these will have the chance to catch some big game species, with the crew knowing just where this is possible. This could find guests reeling in a sailfish or tuna before the day is out.

Keeping your feet on dry land provides the opportunity to enjoy a few different sports. St. Maarten is home to a lovely eighteen-hole golf course that anyone can play. Those that like riding can get on horseback to see the countryside of a nature park. A different way of riding around the nature trails is on bike and these can also be trekked on foot.

The sights around the island are definitely worth taking in, so organizing a tour is something to do while there. Some of the best places to take in include Fort Amsterdam, Fort Willem I and the Sucker Garden Salt Factory. The main community of Philipsburg is also worth exploring, with sights to see including The Courthouse and the Sint Maarten Museum.

Shopping is a popular pastime on the island to search for some mementos and souvenirs of a trip. The added advantage for this on St. Maarten is that it is a duty free region. A trip to the town center streets in Philipsburg is the best idea for this, with a number of retail outlets on these offering a wide variety of goods for sale.

The child-friendly activities at St. Maarten Park make it a great family destination. It is home to a zoo, where kids can see a variety of local and exotic animals.
