People who work in these businesses, public or private, provide tourism and travel services to the general public. They work on behalf of their suppliers, which may include package tours, airlines, cruise lines, hotels and railways. People wanting to enter the industry will find that travel agent jobs are available worldwide.

Many travel agencies services regular tourists. They might also be assigned to working closely with business travelers. In fact, some of these agencies specialize in business only. Each agency is different. These may also act as general sales agents for international travel companies, which permits them to have offices in places outside of their headquarters.

Agencies of today were first established around the second portion of the nineteenth century. It was a man named Thomas Cook who led the way, developing a package tour and establishing agencies that worked closely with Midland Railway. Of course the industry started to grow once traveling was more affordable and accessible. Commercial aviation became more commonplace during the 1920s and was a time when this industry also saw more success.

These businesses and their staff are agents. That is, their job is based around selling of services and products for suppliers. They do not keep stock. Rather, as packages and tickets are requested and purchased by clients they are made available to the agency at a discounted cost. Profit, or the commission made, is calculated by subtracting the price paid by customers from the discount price the agency was given.

People interested in this position should be good salespeople. They must be able to convince clients to make a purchase. The more expensive the final sale is, the more profit they are expected to receive. Details of how commission is made may vary by company, which is important to keep in mind. Some airlines have stopped providing commission to these agencies, so there may be certain regulations in place when it comes to the percentage premium or standard flat fee that is issued per sale.

In most parts of the world, people selling these packages and tickets have to be licensed as professional agents. They may work as staff at these companies or be freelancers. The amount of jobs available in the field are decreasing because of the rise in self-service sits and the Internet, which makes it easier to plan trips. Still, more are starting to travel.

Success in this industry may take some time. Still, there are plenty of classes and programs available to people interested in training and education. Those who want to work for an agency should find out what services the it provides, as well salary and pay rate set up. Freelance agents are encouraged to seek clientele, and develop their name and brand in the field.

These agencies are a popular choice for several reasons. They may offer discounted rates on packages. Furthermore, these professionals can ensure that all of the travel, lodging and other accommodations are properly set up. This can take a lot of stress out of planning a trip.
