Backpacking In Millisle

Millisle is a village on the Ards Peninsula in County Down, Northern Ireland. It is about 3 miles (4.8 km) south of Donaghadee. Millisle is situated in the townlands of Ballymacruise and Ballycopeland, the civil parish of Donaghadee and the historic barony of Ards Lower. It is a popular coastal town with a load of beaches and caravan sites, and a windmill. Ballycopeland Windmill, Millisle, Northern Ireland.

The Windmill is worth checking out for its artistic charm. Top sights to look out for:

- Millisle Church of Ireland - Adams Park, home of Abbey Villa FC - Ballycopeland Windmill and Visitor's Centre

- The cool lagoon and pool here in Millisle - The main beach in the village of Millisle - The Church representing the patron saint of Ireland

- Millisle Presbyterian Church - Northern Ireland Prison Service College - The First and Last Pub (allegedly visited by King William III)

- Millisle Young Offender's Residence

- The Orange Hall for Protestants in the village

- An Airfield strip but no airport and this one is incomplete

- Woburn Road Farm

- A coffee shop which doubles up as a place selling pottery

The total population of this zone is around 2300 people

Where to be based overnight:

- The caravan and camping park in Millisle

- A massive house known locally as the "Pinecroft"

- Ocean water drifting in

- Another camping zone near the village or settlement of Ballywhiskin

Head to the "First & Last" public house for a local beer and a bite

The fish and chip shop called McClements is recommended

For coffee, tea and handmake crafts - pottery, crockery etc. head to "Eden Pottery"

Our Millisle Secrets:

- Many Jewish people from Eastern Europe were looked after in Millisle at a farm on the Woburn Road, owned by the Magill family, which took refugees from May 1938 until its closure in 1948.

- There are less references to wall murals and political messages here in Millisle.

Transport:

- You can use buses to get from places like Bangor, Newtownards and Belfast from Millisle. The Translink company has buses that are numbered 10C and 9 or even 9B and they can help you out.
