Tips For Your Aircraft Ground Power Unit

By Matthew West

GPUs are used to fly and power an aircraft. Without this, no aircraft will work, that is how important an aircraft ground power unit is. To avoid it from getting damage, an inspection and maintenance will be vital. When it is that time of the year for a GPU inspection, different areas will be inspected during the process.

GPUs are always used so it is jut vital to keep it in good hands and to always inspect it. Proper maintenance is the answer for this. When not maintained the right way, dangers will come next and it would cost you a big amount of money. For your maintenance plan, do not forget to include all the basics, rest, inspections, and calibrations. Below are tips on how to properly care for your GPUS.

First is the basics. You have to remember that the power of your GPU should be shut off before you attempt to use or inspect it. If it needs to be powered during an inspection or when performing troubleshooting, make sure that someone is with you during the process and that someone knows how to shut down the machine. Safety first.

Inspect if the electrolyte levels of the batteries are ion the appropriate level. All your cables and terminals are not only cleaned by tightly installed as well. Engine mounts and isolators are free from breaking and bending. No signs of oil spill from the motor.

Cooling system. For the cooling system, check its radiator cap first. This should be calibrated well in the right pressure which is found on the manufacturer guideline. Do an inspection to the rubber seal if there are any cracks visible or you see other signs of damages, replaced it with another.

The fins of the radiator should always be clean and straight. When you see some green stains on the fin, it means to say that there is a leak going on. In such situation, perform a pressure test right away. Be sure that coolant level on the other hand is a mixture of water and antifreeze, which is evenly measured.

Undercarriage. Next on your list is to inspect the undercarriage and running rigging. Inspect the activity and the modification of the break. Tires are checked for appropriate swelling and wear. When tires are uneven, look a good look at its arrangement and the toe settings. Tow bars requires consideration, as well. Hooks should be in place and no excessive side movements.

The engine. In an engine, oil leaks are dangerous, so keep an eye for that. Inspect the sensors and wiring for bald spots. When you hear the isolator making a cracking sound or any distortion is spotted, have it repaired as this may cause electrical problems which can lead to a bigger problem. Clean your wheels and inspect it, if needed.

Inspect the condition of the break to ensure safe operation and that correct adjustment has been made. Tow bar must not excessively bend and the latch locks are into place. When the problem is already out of your hand, that would be the best time for you to call the help of a service company.
