Discover Melbourne Accommodation Tennis Options, Short Walk To Tennis Centre

By Jasmine Zahara

The Australia Open tennis tournament is played at Melbourne Park every January. It is therefore the first Grand Slam tournament of the year. In the latest tournament (2010) the Mens' Singles competition was won by Roger Federer (Switzerland) and Serena Williams of the United States was victorious in the Womens' Singles. This brief Melbourne accommodation tennis article reviews some accommodation options for tennis fans who want to stay within convenient walking distance of the venue. Hotels near Melbourne park will fill up rapidly so early booking is advised.

Melbourne Park Tennis Centre, located on Batman Avenue, is the venue for the Australian Open. This is near the south eastern edge of Melbourne's CBD (Central Business District) and a couple of the hotels here (Medina Executive and Hotel Lindrum on Flinders Street) are about 700 metres from the tennis courts.

The Medina Executive is a seventeen storey building, with four car park levels. As well as being conveniently placed for the tennis, it is also near to Melbourne Cricket Ground, and just a couple of minutes by foot from Federation Square.

The accommodation at the Medina is in the form of one, two and three bedroomed self contained apartments. All apartments have city views, some have views over Port Philip Bay (just "The Bay" to the locals). Rooms have cable/satellite TV, and guests can make complimentary use of the hotel's gymnasium facilities.

The Medina Executive is in an area of town with some of Melbourne's top restaurants and best theatres. Nearby restaurants include the Press Club, Fifteen and Movida. The Circle Tram line runs just past the Medina, and it is just a short ride to some other Melbourne sights such as the Queen Vic market, and Docklands.

As the Medina Executive is one of the closest hotels to the tennis and cricket grounds it can be expected to be fully booked during major sporting events, so early booking is advised. This hotel can be booked online at any good hotel accommodation website specializing in Australia/New Zealand travel.

The Hotel Lindrum, also on Flinders Street, is also just a short distance from the Australian Open venue. The Lindrum (59 suites and rooms) is a four star establishment. Full breakfast is served by the Lindrum's restaurant, and all rooms have CD/DVD players, satellite TV, high speed internet and tea/coffee making facilities.

In addition to being convenient for Australian Open and test match fans, the Medina and Lindrum are both just a short walk away from the Crown Casino complex, on the opposite bank of the Yarra River. The Crown Casino and Entertainment Complex opened in 1997, and has played an important part in regenerating Melbourne's Southbank.

The Crown Complex's three hotels (Crown Metropol, Crown Towers, both five stars, and Crown Promenade, 4.5 stars) are a bit further from the tennis, but still in reasonable walking distance. They are located in a modern complex, along with the largest casino to be found in the Southern Hemisphere. As well as the casino the complex has cinema, food outlets (fast food and restaurants) and many shops. As in many parts of Melbourne there is a great variety of types of restaurant, from classic French to modern Australian, and Asian cuisines such as Japanese, Thai and Indonesian.
