As Soon As The Instant And Circumstances Are Right, You Will Catch Me Running Off To The Riverside

By Jon Izzard

The best news this morning is that my bed does not loath me. I am not certain about the cause of the shoulder soreness still, but the situation with my neck is Cricket Ache caused by falling asleep in front of the television whilst watching the cricket and being unable to retain wakefulness. At least I did manage to see the end of the match. It won't be happening again, I am very much a Test match fan and won't be bothering to stop up for the limited over matches. Besides, this being a Friday, in the coming weeks I'll be trying to get an early start at work so that I can slope off in after lunch to go angling.

What with the present Mrs Izzard returning to work after an extended sick leave due to breast cancer treatment since April in 2 weeks, and the promise of the weather turning milder through February and March, the temptation of the canal towpath will very likely be overpowering now that I have decided to update the fishing tackle and resume fishing again.

When I was looking through my fishing tackle recently, I discovered an old rod licence which was dated 1994, which very likely was the previous occasion I went angling. It feels an awfully long time and yet I recall it clearly, a lovely day in June when I went for a day's fishing on the Thames at Walton, and I caught my single ever barbel. This may seem weird, but most of the fishing I did as a youth was on a fishery in the village where I grew up, and barbel are a river fish.

In those days, I did not have a a lot of fishing tackle as I didn't have a lot of money and yet I still have the majority of it from then. I find it staggering that even when I did earn decent money, I never really thought about fishing or spending some money and stcoking up on some really top fishing tackle and using up more time by the water.

When I do go back, I will need to spend some cash, initially getting a rod licence and joining the Birmingham Anglers Association who manage angling on the canals in the area here, then I will need some modern fishing tackle as mine is old and possibly illegal now, especially the hooks which all look to have barbs which I am almost sure are not allowed now.

I can't wait to resume, though I'm not humiliated to state that I was always and definitely will be now, a very fair weather fisherman, so I will need dry, warm conditions. It doesn't have to be clear, just not wet and chilly and if it is a Friday after the present Mrs Izzard has resumed work (and I'm legal) then the chances are I am going to go fishing. Brilliant.
