Sun Peaks BC Is For Year Round Fun

By Janine Hester

The newly formed municipality of Sun Peaks BC is an all season playground. Canada's third largest ski resort, and the largest in British Columbia's interior, is growing into a world class destination. Located about 35 miles, or 55 kilometers, north of Kamloops, it has the potential to challenge BC's other great ski resorts. It also has a variety of summer activities. More affordable housing and accommodations will be needed to help make this happen. Additional access is also necessary. With major leaders involved in it's development, it should continue to increase in popularity. Nestled between two mountains, it is a great destination to relax and decompress or rev up and play.

June 2010 saw Sun Peaks become the first designated mountain resort municipality in Canada. This formality makes it possible for the community to have a better say in it's own affairs. The permanent population is less than five hundred people. The resort needs controlled growth to become a bigger tourist destination.

Three mountains to ski means that there is a variety of terrain for any ability level. The vertical drop, at 2894 feet or 882 meters, ranks it with some of North America's best. A nine acre terrain park is available for snow boarders. With an annual snowfall average of about eighteen feet, or 5 and a half meters, good ski conditions are the norm.

During summer there a host of other activities. The golf course on the valley floor has stunning mountain panoramas. Downhill mountain biking trails are available with lift access. For the less adventurous, there is the weekly Sun Peaks & Region Farmer's Market. This brings local arts and crafts along with area ranchers and farmers.

There is a need for more affordable housing for local employees. This is crucial to the operation of the resort. More guest lodging is also necessary for the resort is to garner a larger share of visitors.

Overall access needs improvement. Direct flights from Seattle are available through a couple different airlines. The drive from the east is indirect and longer than it would be with a new access road. This hinders travelers from Banff and Lake Louise.

Sun Peaks BC has a bright future. The first mayor is Al Raine who was a major contributor to Whistler's development into the premier resort on the continent. Olympic gold medalist Nancy Greene Raine, the mayor's spouse, is the resort's director of skiing. She out on the slopes most weekends and holidays hosting public mountain tours. Having high profile personalities like these involved can only lead to positive results.
