When traveling by air, do not count on the airline to provide for your needs, even on a long flight. Pack your headphones, a blanket and even a pillow if you feel like you will use them. Additionally, it is a good idea to bring something to snack on.

Leave what valuables you can at home and don't take them on your trip. Valuables attract attention and increase your risk of being a victim of theft.

Educate yourself on the current political and social situations of a country before you visit it. The travel.state.gov website provides real-time information about affairs that may be troublesome for travelers. Not doing this could result in a quite few very negative situations.
