How To Size A Wakesurf Board

By Lucy Petalco

Wakesurf boards aren't sold in a bunch of sizes, so the sizing procedure is not too difficult. Unlike wake boarding or waterskiing, you don't have to buy boots and bindings that match, so this also simplifies the shopping procedure. There is just one piece of gear to worry about.

If you are purchasing a board to be used by several different people, or possibly on a number of different speed boats, you might prefer to stick with a middle-of-the-road board that can be appropriate for more individuals, riding styles and wake sizes. By doing this, you don't limit the people who can borrow the board.

Here are some things to consider:

The main thing to remember is that smaller boards are better for smaller-sized people and bigger boards are better for larger people. This may seem obvious, but it does not mean that if you are small that you need to use a small board. In fact, most medium sized wakesurf boards can work well for both small and large people just fine. Many people choose a medium sized board specifically so they can accommodate several people of a variety of different sizes. Secondly, beginners will do better learning on a larger board, because the increased surface area gives it more stability. In addition, boards increase in buoyancy the larger they are, and therefore make it easier to stand at the start.

Keep this in mind if you have an entire family or group of pals who is simply learning the sport.

Third, larger boards perform better behind boats with smaller wakes. On the other hand, smaller boards are better for boats that give off larger wakes. Again, this can be challenging, if you are attempting to fit a variety of different people and wake sizes with one piece of equipment. As you can see, if you plan on using your board behind several different boats, it makes more sense to invest in a medium sized board.

You can also readjust the wake size in your personal boat by filling the ballast tanks or purchasing fat sacks to put inside the boat or simply load up a ton of friends to sit on one side of the boat to create a larger wake. According to a popular sports gear site, all boats are different, and it could take some some trial and error to figure out the very best places for individuals to sit in the boat to create a big wake. In any case, just enjoy yourself!
