Simple Tricks To Make Your Move An Easy One

By Joyce McIntosh

Moving doesn't have to be a stress-filled nightmare. In fact, if you use a few clever tricks, the whole process can be fairly straightforward. Obviously there is work involved, but there is no reason to turn your next move into a horrible experience. Before you stress out, read the following handy moving tricks.

When people feel overwhelmed, they tend to avoid doing anything. But rather than become paralyzed with stress, just take a deep breath, grab paper and pen and create a comprehensive list with all the tasks that need to be accomplished during the moving process. No detail is too big or too small, from selecting the movers to ensuring that you return sledgehammer you borrowed from your next door neighbor in 1997. Grab a file folder, too, and put the list inside the folder with other important moving documents.

Waiting until the last minute to pack is definitely one of the worst moving mistakes that you can make. Never leave this to the last second, in fact get going immediately and go out and procure a huge amount of boxing and packing paper. Then start packing anything that you don't use every day or every week. Make an effort not only to pack up stuff but also to purge some items that you don't need any more or don't use. This makes unpacking much easier, and you also can make the unpacking process quicker if you assign a different color to each room at the new place. For instance, use a black marker on boxes for the kitchen, but use a blue marker for boxes for your child's room and an orange marker for items that go in the garage, etc.

As the moving day approaches pack up toiletries, clothing and medications into suitcases that you can live out of them temporarily while you are unpacking. Before the movers arrive, toss the suitcases into your car so they don't get packed inadvertently. Other things to toss in the suitcases include chargers for all of your electronic devices, as well as some toys, crayons and coloring books to keep younger children occupied while you deal with moving and unpacking. A blanket or stuffed animal also might be needed by your young child and you definitely do want that to be misplaced.

Don't be shy about asking friends and family for help and if anyone asks if they can help, take them up on the offer. If they can't actually help you move items, perhaps they can keep pets and children for the day so that you don't have to worry about them. Having a packing party and treat your friends or family to some dinner, snacks or wine as they help you tackle the chores. After you are all moved in and unpacked, invite everyone over and serve a big dinner or perhaps offer to babysit so they can have a night out or pass out gift cards to people who helped out.

If you need a place to store belongings before you move into a new house, townhome or apartment, consider renting a self-storage unit. There are mini storage facilities that offer rentals by the week and also by the month, so you should be able to find an inexpensive, short-term solution to your storage problem. Unlike when a moving company stores your belongings, many self-storage facilities allow you 24/7 access to your stuff, which might be helpful if you desperately need something that is packed.
