Pruning A Tree

By Bill Duggen

What is tree pruning? Pruning is a process by which the unwanted branch or other parts of trees are discarded. The main objective of pruning is to develop the growth and maintaining the shape. It is the most convenient method to give your tree desirable figure and size.

Season of tree pruningTo get latest advantage from pruning and training, it is judicious to work at the juvenile stage of plant. If you practice pruning during the growing stage of plant, it will be able to check any snags of its body. Most often adults are ignored as these trees dont show better performances although they are pruned expensively. It is wise to exercise pruning on adult trees when they stay in dormancy. As soon as any injuries appear on fresh trees, pruning is experienced.

Pruning of juvenile tree It is nothing but pruning which is initiated on new trees first year after transplanting Pruning is done to identify trouble for main log in early period. The main purpose of lifting lower branches on the stem of the tree so that they can supply nutrition to the tree and at the same time shade to the lower branches.

The scaffold branches are preferable to angle at 45 degrees with the central log. The lateral branches always prefer to originate from widely spaced branches if we compare with closely spaced scaffolds.

Pruning of large tree The people of the state think that during storm large tree can hamper their property. So, they are willing to train their trees from top areas. Topping a tree is not a good practice at all. You should not harm the tree through this practice as it involves cutting the central leader of the tree.

Thinning operation Through thinning the tree gets more sunlight in the basal portion as the canopy area is becoming spreader by this operation. It is nothing but thinning through which the conflict to wind and pressure for the period of deficiencies can be reduced.

For obtaining better feedback we must practice thinning so that we can remove abnormal branches of a tree. Lastly, you should remove the oversized limbs and intensely grown limbs are removed selectively.

Cut the top portion The main objective of heading back is to decrease the complete volume of a tree. You should remove the top portion when you are working with a well developed lateral branch. It is convenient to select a branch that forms a 45 degree angle with the discarded branches in case of heading back to cross lateral branches.

When you are compelled to cut a limb that have an upward direction, you should give an angle cut to prevent water accumulation on the wound. Proper care should be taken during cutting large branches so that the cutting must not planed with the stem rather the outer side of the lapel.

Pruning wound treatment Research has established that untreated wound sealed fast than the treated wound. The tree is prone to decay more when the wound is closed as the closed wound provides a suitable growth condition for the wood hindering microorganism. If you dont take any treatment, the wound may open for a long time. Because, the cambial cells may be destroyed by wound dressing in some case.
