Importance Of Aircraft Warning Lights On Buildings

By Dorothy Gray

Infrastructure enhancement has led to the development of very tall building structures that serve a lot of purposes. However, these buildings could pose a risk to aircrafts especially when flying at night. For this reason, there are aircraft warning lights on buildings to avoid collisions. These lightings help the pilots to see the buildings when flying at night and sometimes during the day.

The airspace warning lights are some very bright lighting systems that are visible from a very long distance. There are two types of warning lighting. Some are red while others are white in color. There are also some that are always on while others go off and back on in cycles. In most cases, red systems are installed in the urban buildings because it is much easier to see them from above.

White illuminations are better for cautioning the pilots during the daytime. The very white light may be visible from an extended distance away therefore making work simpler for the captains. They are also suitable for the structures that are too high like the ones higher than 400 feet. Just to be safer, the developers fit both the white and the red lighting systems.

These lightings are not only used on buildings but also on the aircrafts. When flying at night, it may be very hard for a pilot to spot another aircraft when they are in the same airspace. For this reason, they usually have them so that it may be easier to pave way for one another and avoid collisions. In most cases, it is the red light that is used.

The method in which the illuminations are positioned on a structure is also a very vital factor to be considered. These lights ought to be seen from long distances and also from different directions. This is the reason why they are mostly installed on the uppermost point where they may be viewed easily. They are placed in a way that they may be seen from whichever direction the plane is flying from.

Most developers prefer to arrange the lightings in clusters in a strategic manner that will maximize their visibility. They do not only place them on the highest point but also on other lower points so that the warning coverage is increased. Some even prefer to use lights that will double up as the backup lightings for the building.

In addition to the light, some states require that buildings are panted with cautionary paint. In such states, the painting is usually a compulsory requirement for buildings that are higher than 200 feet. This paint can be white or red and is usually visible from a far distance. However, this paint is very expensive and developers in areas with such requirements prefer to build shorter structures.

These warning devices have a small impact on the environment. These lights can contribute to light pollution and also affect the tower kill of birds. However, the purpose why they are installed is very important and cannot be changed because of the few negative impacts that they have. The installation is usually compulsory and not a choice of a developer.
