Did you know that white cats are revered for their color? White represents virginity and purity...for Satanists! Animal shelters typically do not adopt black cats in October, and now they are adding white cats to that list as well.

Fortunately, white cats are fairly popular to adopt, however holding them back during Halloween does nothing but increases the euthanasia rate of all cats in October.

As someone who loves animals, has been an Executive Director and has started a rescue I can tell you how important it is to match the right cat to the right family. For the last 20 years I would deny all requests to adopt a black cat to anyone during the month of October. In the last 5 years I added all white cats to this list as well.

So, apparently every October I would turn off my gut sense, not even bother to screen an adopter and just deny every black and white cat inquiry. I get a good giggle out of that now! But then I look around and realize that 85% of the other rescues are still doing this. The truth is I train all of my volunteers to screen. If they get a gut reaction that something is not right the know to place the adoption on hold or refuse it. A Fair Review The Movie Hit Exiled

If you're looking for an action flick that's a little different from the usual shaky cam and incoherent running and shooting, Exiled may be the answer. Years after a top ranked lieutenant in the Triad betrays his boss, the boss, played by Simon Yam, sends a pair of hitmen to take him out. Meanwhile, two members of the gang come to protect the man. These characters were all friends in the gang, and it's out of duty that the two hitmen come to kill their old partner. They come to a compromise and decide to pull off a big score to support the man's wife and child before settling their conflict.

There's a warmth and sweetness to what happens. Where most gangster movies are defined by that cold, impersonal "Just Business" approach to violence, here, none of the characters really want to shoot at each other, they've been friends since they were young, and they seem upset that it's come to this.

The movie was directed by Johnnie To, the Hong Kong legend, who came out with his first films around the same time as John Woo and Ringo Lam were defining the Heroic Bloodshed genre of HK action flicks. Where those earlier films were defined by the anger at the Chinese takeover of the city, this one has a sense of forgiveness, compassion and understanding, having been made after the takeover.

The film really feels like a dream, with slow motion shootouts taking several minutes while only carrying about thirty seconds of action were they to be shot in real time. One incredible sequence has a character throwing an empty drink can into the air, and the shootout takes place over several minutes as the can falls to the floor in slow motion just seconds after the final bullet is fired.

The story is fairly confusing. You have to simply watch it for the emotional drive of the characters, because the plot line is all over the place, however, this actually helps the movie's dream like quality. Even the director has said that he didn't know exactly what was going on while directing the film, and was hoping that he would figure it out in editing. When that didn't work out, he decided that, maybe someday, it'll make sense.

The Heroic Bloodshed genre was defined as being an angry, violent group of films, largely as a reaction to the Chinese takeover of Hong Kong. The heroes would take on hundreds of enemies at a time in a symbol of the Hong Kong independent spirit against that of communist China. So it's interesting to see To taking the genre in a new direction. This film is defined by its themes of compassion and forgiveness, and there's an odd gentleness to even the most gruesome violence in the film.

Where the classic Heroic Bloodshed films were about anger and revenge, this one is about forgiveness and compassion, and is certainly a unique, one of a kind action film, both exciting and trance like at once.

It focuses on Lawrence's involvement with the Arab tribes and their rebellion against the Turks.

Borrowing a page from Citizen Kane, the movie opens with Lawrence's death in 1935. He was killed while riding a motorcycle near his home when he swerved to miss two boys on bicycles. Reporters at his funeral services try in vain to glean some understanding of the man from those who knew him best. The action then shifts to World War I Cairo. Lieutenant Lawrence is dispatched to ascertain what chance Prince Faisal appears to have in his rebellion against the Turks. In a meeting with Faisal, Lawrence recommends a daring attack on Aqaba. From that point on, Lawrence finds himself firmly entrenched in the Arab Rebellion, even when it puts him at odds with his native land. During the course of the war, he discovers aspects of his personality that disturb him, such as a certain enjoyment of killing.

Few members of the cast were the first choices for the parts. The title character was played by Peter O'Toole, although he got the part only after Albert Finney and Marlon Brando turned it down. The role of Prince Faisal went to Alec Guinness after Laurence Olivier had to drop out. Producer Sam Spiegel wanted Cary Grant to portray General Allenby, but director David Lean convinced him to offer the part to Jack Hawkins. Horst Buchholz and Alain Delon were both offered the role of Sherif Ali, which eventually went to Omar Sharif. Reporter Jackson Bentley was played by Arthur Kennedy, who stepped in after Edmond O'Brien became ill and had to leave the picture. However, Anthony Quinn, who played Auda abu Tayi, and Jose Ferrer, who was cast as the Turkish Bey, were not second choices. Neither was Claude Rains, who portrayed Mr. Dryden; Rains was one of Lean's favorite actors.

Several additional characters were also based on real people. General Murray, Prince Faisal, Auda abu Tayi, and General Allenby all played a part in Lawrence's life. His servants, Farraj and Daud, and Talal, who committed a suicidal charge at Tafas, were real. So was Gasim, who was first rescued and then executed by Lawrence.

Other characters were composites. Sherif Ali was modeled primarily after Prince Faisal's cousin. The character of Colonel Brighton seems to have been based largely on Stewart Newcombe. Lowell Thomas, who actually covered Lawrence's story and played a large part in his fame, was the inspiration for reporter Jackson Bentley.

As is often the case when movies are inspired by a true story, the film misses on the accuracy of some points. For instance, the Arab Council was not as ineffective as the movie depicted. It also shows the Arab army deserting Lawrence, which did not happen. In a scene set in late 1917, the reporter mentions that America had yet to enter the war when in reality it had.

A debate has raged since the movie's release over whether it accurately depicts T. E. Lawrence. Some state that the facts indicate he was egotistical while others deny it. Some argue that he was masochistic and others that he was homosexual. His brother and Lowell Thomas have both criticized the film's portrayal of Lawrence. The debates have not decreased the popularity of the film.

The film has been shown in several different lengths since its release. When it debuted, its length was 222 minutes if one excluded the overture, exit music, and intermission. The next version cut twenty more minutes, and then a release in the 1970s came in at 187 minutes. Most recently, a 216 minute cut was released in 1989.

You might think your snowmobile's performance is at its peak. It's got great horsepower, the snowmobile suspension is perfect, and you've tuned the clutches just right. Those clutches actually contain hidden horsepower, which will give your snow machine superior performance.

Check how much clearance there is between the drive belt and the clutch sheaves. An excess will reduce your top speed and acceleration. When two identical new sleds race against one another, this is sometimes the winning factor.

In order to check your belt side clearance, slide the belt to one side of the clutch shaft. Place a feeler gauge between the clutch sheave and the side of the belt. Like the setting for your snowmobile suspension, look for the perfect range. A clearance of .010" to .020" is ideal.

If your clearance measures greater than .020", do the measurements again using a new belt this time. Sometimes the only thing causing excess is a worn drive belt. You don't want to adjust things unless you need to.

If adjustment is necessary, take off the spider and either add or subtract shims as needed. Check your local dealer for shims if you don't have any; the same dealer who handled your snowmobile suspension is fine. Special tools are also available for spider removal or clutch service.

Clutching system cleanliness is a second factor of snowmobile performance. Clutch sheaves grab the belt when they are clean. Material such as mold, oil, grease, gasoline, or even rubber build-up increase slippage and give you less power.

Never use solvent-based cleaners like alcohol, petroleum, cleaning solvents, or other chemical-based products when cleaning clutches and belts. These absorb into the rubber or aluminum and cause even more slippage. To scrape off rubber build-up, scuff the area with steel wool, wash the clutch faces in hot soapy water, and air blow or wipe dry.

For particularly stubborn areas, use 180-grit sandpaper, being careful not to create low spots. To remove contaminates, follow the same procedures listed above while using a medium to soft bristle brush. The cleanliness of the clutch compartment is also important.

Also, don't forget to consider 'the field'. Many futures wagers lump a number of teams or competitors together as 'the field' and offer a single price to bet them all. Occasionally, the quick thinking handicapper can find unique value situations. For example, after Dale Earnhardt's tragic death in 2001 some sportsbooks continued to offer a 'field' position on rookie of the year. A bettor who followed NASCAR closely would have quickly realized that Kevin Harvick--who replaced Earnhardt in his Richard Childress racing Chevy--qualified for the 'rookie of the year' award and could have bet the field at prices as high as 15/1. After he won his first race, the price for 'the field' dropped to 2/1 and by midseason 'the field' was a -250 favorite.

While this sort of situation is unique, there have been other situations where 'the field' presented good values. At one point, it wasn't unusual to find a 'field' bet on NASCAR road races that included the road course specialists like Ron Fellows and Boris Said--meaning you could bet these 'ringers' and several others with one bet! Again, these opportunities don't come around often but the value they present justifies paying close attention to them.

As a postscript, I want to emphasize the importance on shopping around any futures play for the best price. Shopping points is a smart thing to do on any wager, but the differences from book to book are frequently most extreme with futures plays. A little legwork can yield a substantially better price and the resulting better value.
