Unique Window Treatments Make Your Design Statement

By Liliana Mills

There are many different aspects in home decorating. One of these is those designs used on windows. Standard designs are available, and so too are customized ones, in many local stores. Many prefer to make their own individual design statement, however, by choosing unique window treatments. They opt to have a design that is theirs alone, portraying their personal decorating design statements.

Window decorating includes such things as blinds, drapes, curtains, and screens made of different fabrics. Cornice boards are another design element that depicts personal style. Formal or informal, the look can match the individual's preference. Color schemes are monochromatic, complementary, or harmonizing hues from the color wheel. No matter what style is used, this is one area that makes a look individual.

Fabrics can be either solid or print. Plaids and stripes also make their own statement. Interesting use of construction techniques like pleats and gathers, in combination with certain fabric designs, can produce a completely different look. Though designs in fabrics may be limited, the combination of styles and use of them gives an individual look. Where one person might cover a cornice board in a print, with solid panels, another might do just the opposite, using a solid on the cornice board and a print for the panels.

Blinds are another element that where choices are individualized. They may be of wood, acrylic, or fabric. Styles vary from horizontal slats or vertical slats to Roman or roller styles. With the newer acrylic ones, many colors are available, from pastel to bold, vibrant colors, to deep rich ones that give a more formal look. They also provide better control of light and temperature.

Ornamental touches can also give a totally different look from any others. Beads, baubles, bows and other elements give a totally different look. If you aren't into them, you can have such things as fringed and rope-style tie backs. They can be in either coordinating or contrasting colors. Even embroidery can be used as a design element. Combine any of these with lace sheers and you have another totally distinct look.

The style decisions depend not only on personal taste, but on room functions as well. Though an individual can choose not to use traditional designs for, say a kitchen or bathroom, normally the different rooms will be taken into consideration when styles are chosen. Heavily pleated draperies might look good in the formal living room, but not so much in a family room, or a kitchen.

A person's home is very personal to them. Every person has their own idea for what is acceptable in interior design. Decisions about color, style, and usefulness all must be considered when making design statements. Each person must make their own design decisions. Professionals can help by guiding and advising them, but the final decision is the homeowner's alone.

Unique window treatments are not the only element in design, but they are a very important one. Carefully choosing decorating features mean more likelihood for satisfaction with the style chosen. Personal preferences are most significant in the home and provide great satisfaction.
