By Paulette Short

Golf is a very popular game in the world today. It attracts attention from all walks of life and has elevated several people to celebrity status. Many people today have started devoting their time to learn the skills involved so as to become good players. For some, they do it for leisure while others are doing it so as to develop a career. There are some tips involved in playing a mental game of golf. When followed, one can make significant improvement on the course.

Every morning is an opportunity to set the day right. This is done by among many other things eating a nutritiously balanced meal. It should include all the food types needed by the human body and be in a moderate amounts. Keeping oneself well hydrated helps in maintaining balance between the different body systems. One way to do this is to avoid drinks that can dehydrate a person.

A good practice is to know the playing field well before the playing begins. This is easily done by taking walks around the playing area. It is not a tiring exercise. Doing this helps the player to have a mental image of the places that he will be during the whole session and plan how to play. Light exercises are good to condition the muscles to make excellent movements while making shots.

Once the competition has commenced, the player should keep a bottle of water close to him. In between shots, he can take sips of the water to replenish the body's reserves. Eating a ripe fruit such as a banana is good. It keeps hunger that would be a distraction at bay. Players should not overeat during the play. This stresses the body's systems and affects performance.

Each time one is expected to make a shot should be taken as unique. One should not think of the past shots made or the remaining ones. Thinking about the opponent's performance is also a distraction which needs to be avoided. This will allow the brain to focus fully on the task at hand which is what matters at that particular time.

A habit before and after making a swing helps the body to synchronize with the brain. One can choose any custom that he feels comfortable with. When it has been established, it should be linked to good performance. Once this connection has been made, it will help a player to make good shots by doing the habit before and after a swing.

Sometimes, a player may make a bad shot. This is normal even for experienced golfers. So one should not dwell on the bad shot. There is no need to get upset about a mistake. Quickly get over it and start focusing on the next one. Getting upset over a bad performance will only worsen the next swing since the body will be tense from stress.

To make it in golfing, one needs to practice hard. However, practice alone is not enough. Playing a mental game of golf is needed and can be achieved by following simple methods. Some work better than others. Emphasis should be placed on those that are most effective.
