Herb Gardening - What You Need To Know

By Benjamin Rowe

Herbs have been around since time immemorial. Since that time, herbs have served a variety of purposes. Herbs have been used to treat illness and also in cooking. They were even believed to have magical charms. Is having your own herb garden what you are interested in? To establish an herb garden, here are some ideas to keep in mind.

Plan you garden.

Think about the herbs that you want to plant. Have you thought about their types? Your choices include annuals, biennials, or perennials.

How much space will they occupy in your garden? You can even buy a book that can give you the right information with regards to the specific plants that you are planning on growing.

Listing or drawing your garden on paper is what you need to do first. If you want to avoid disturbing the perennials when the time comes to pull out the annuals, then you should separate the annuals from the perennials. You won't have a hard time when it is time to till your garden as long as perennials can be planted on the edge of your garden.

Another thing to remember is that you have to plant the tall ones at the back and the shorter ones in front. Also, provide your plants with enough space to grow. In this area, proper position will be really helpful.

Some Design Ideas

Having a square herb bed is what you can try to consider. This square bed of yours can be divided into four by two paths that crosses at midpoint and measures 3 feet. Stone and brick can border it as well. Another thing that will do the trick is a wooden ladder. When you lay it down on your garden, you can then plant your herbs between its rungs. You can also choose to have a wagon wheel bed. This is just like planting with the wooden ladders. Plant your herbs in between the wagon wheel's wedges.

Get Your Plants Growing

Different plants of course have different needs. The herbs that you want to plant in the planning stage is what you would have to determine because of this reason. More or less, this will help you find out how you should care for your plants. With starting seeds, germination and soil temperature rules are what you need to remember. If you see the seedlings sprouting, then be sure to check the air circulation, humidity, and sunlight of the plants. When you see some leaves appear, allow proper spacing.

One of the plants that are easy to grow are herbs. You just have to provide them with an effective drainage, sunlight, enough humidity or moisture and fertile soil. Even with just minimally meeting these requirements, a good harvest is what they are bound to produce.
