Camping Essentials Tips For Beginners

By Jason Nolan

Quick Disclaimer: You should always remember that any camping tips we give you are just advice, they are not "rules" or "laws. What may help someone else may not always help you, and vice versa. Different scenarios call for different actions. That being said, it doesn't make camping tips useless. These tips should at least stop you from making any beginner mistakes that could potentially put you in harms way.

#1: Plan Ahead! The most helpful thing to do is to plan your camping needs in advance. We urge you to look at our Camping Essentials Guide and Checklist to plan for anything you may need on your trip. Follow that checklist and you will be well on your way to planning a very successful camping trip.

Understand that you don't need to literally have every item on the guide, but is very helpful to decide what is most important to your trip. You also shouldn't feel like a novice for having a checklist; even professional campers have their lists ready.

#2: Wear the Right Footwear! Most people who go camping like to just stay near their camping area, and in this case most types of comfortable footwear should do the trick (of course you should definitely stay away from high heels/dress shoes). If you don't already, grab a great pair of hiking boots or shoes. Make sure that your selected footwear is comfortable and easy to walk in, as well as being water repellant and giving you good traction and grip on the ground. Footwear can go unnoticed many times, but it makes a huge difference.

The third tip is: Choose a Good Backpack! As listed on our camping essential guide, choosing the right size backpack is important. Think about what you will be carrying and how much it weights; from there you will want to choose the best backpack. A good backpack will feel comfortable and sturdy when your carrying it and should feel secure when carrying it. Another thing to look for is a waterproof backpack that will protect your things if it rains or is dropped in water. You should also come up with a good way to pack your bag. Most people don't know that the way you pack your bag can actually influence how much your bag weighs (or, how much your bag FEELS like it weighs).

Tip Number Four: Beware of Animals! When in the wilderness your chances of encountering a dangerous animal are significantly higher. Most of the time you have nothing to fear, as it'll be a harmless creature such as a rabbit or squirrel; but depending on where you are it could be a much more dangerous animal (such as a lion or bear). Professional campers will tell you to have some type of walking stick to fend off creatures with. You shouldn't crouch or bend when in front of an animal, you want to look as large and powerful as possible.

Safety is important, always look for tips when it comes to camping as they can be very helpful. The biggest camping essentials are the tips you learn.
