How to get a good Gun Safe

By Martin Wilkins

Choosing a gun safe does not have to be a difficult decision once you know a few things about gun safes. With the wide variety of choices there is certain to be one that will meet your needs. A few simple questions you can ask yourself will help narrow the field of options and allow you to choose a gun safe with confidence knowing you have chosen one that will meet your needs for years to come.

To begin with, what kind of guns do you need to secure? Long guns may require a certain type of safe and hand guns may be able to use another. Knowing the type of firearm you need to secure now and in the future will make choosing the best gun safe a much easier task. Many safes can store only hand guns while most long gun safes can store both types easily.

Safes designed for hand guns only are usually smaller and more mobile and do not have the capacity to hold long guns. Safes designed for long guns are able to hold both types of firearms and usually will have storage options for either all hand guns or all long guns or a mix of both. Knowing the type of firearm you currently own or are planning to purchase will allow you to be better able to choose the correct type of gun safe.

Next knowing how many firearms need storage is a very important question to answer. A good rule of thumb is to not only consider your current collection but nay possible growth in that collection as well. If you know you will not be adding firearms then purchasing a safe that fits your current collection makes sense. If you plan on adding more firearms choosing a safe with more room than is currently needed is a better option than having to purchase another safe in the future.

Now that you answered those first questions you have a very good starting place for your research. There are two other general areas to consider such as fire ratings and locking mechanisms. Choosing the best of these areas is really a personal choice in deciding what works best for you. Although in fire rating it is probably best to get the highest rated safe as it is better to be a little over protected in this area than under protected.

Locking systems can vary from a simple key lock to a biometric locking system. Most larger gun safes are usually equipped with some kind of electronic lock system usually a combination or code entry system. Many smaller handgun safes are designed as a Fingerprint Safe and will allow easy access to whomever is authorized by entering their fingerprint information into the safes memory. Sometimes your choice of locking systems is limited to the design of the gun safe but you can usually find whatever locking system you desire in most sizes.

After taking all these questions into account you should be much better prepared to purchase a gun safe that fits your requirements. You will find many different opinions as to which gun safe is the very best. However I believe the best gun safe is the one you will actually use as an unused gun safe is the worst gun safe. So choose one that will fit your needs best and then you will have the best gun safe as it is the best fit for you and that is the most important thing in any gun safe.
