Boca Raton Beach Holiday Guide

By Jony Mozen

The thing that draws tourists to this particular patch of the Sunshine State's east coast is the two-mile stretch of pristine beach sand. Boca Raton is Florida's Malibu for lavish spenders, combining upscale shopping with stylish homes offering expansive oceanfront views. The dunes stretch endlessly in both directions, with nothing ahead except the horizon, the sea birds and the shimmering waters of the Atlantic.

Boca, as it is known to the locals, is just 40 miles north of Miami. Fort Lauderdale Airport is just 20 minutes away and Palm Beach Airport is the same distance the other way. Most visitors who come here want to get away from the bedlam and enjoy some relaxing downtime on the isolated and serene beaches.

There's no better place on the east coast for a nice and safe family vacation or even just a day out on the beach with the kids. The city has a family-friendly reputation as one of the safest and cleanest communities to live in and work in the U. S. There are lifeguards keeping an eye on things at the beaches from morning to evening all year round, which is a good thing because the blue skies and year-round sunshine make it hard for people to stay away from the beaches.

There are three city parks on the oceanfront, right alongside the beaches. A day trip to the beach can therefore be combined with family outings and picnics for those who want to make use of the grills, picnic tables, playgrounds and restrooms. Red Reef is especially suited for those with little kids, since the waters are protected by a man-made reef a few feet offshore where children can be safely taught to swim and snorkel.

The 39-acre grounds of Red Reef Park are a treasure trove, and that's in addition to the one-mile beach it faces. The biggest draw in the park is the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center. Children will never want to leave the place, considering that it has a butterfly garden, an aquarium with sharks that gets very lively at feeding time, and an ark's worth of native creatures ranging from manatees to brown pelicans.

Surfers will find a designated surfing area at the southern ends of Red Reef and South Beach Park. For all-out recreation and sports, check out South Inlet Park Beach managed by the county. Visitors can fish from the pier and enjoy a variety of waterfront activities including jet skiing, kayaking, windsurfing, canoeing, sailboarding, beach volleyball and more.

Those seeking more such fun can drive over to Delray Municipal Beach. It's all about sports and recreation, with excellent facilities and conditions for swimming, snorkeling, sailing, surfing and windsurfing. It even has areas marked out for different activities like throwing Frisbees, flying kites and playing paddleball.

Those who think of golf as a religion will find heaven on earth on the oceanfront golf course. Anyone who needs a change from the sun, sand and water will find plenty more in terms of attractions such as the Museum of Art and the Daggerwing Nature Center. Families with kids may also want to check out the children's museum, carousel and science emporium in Sugar Sand Park.
