By Marlene Blevins

Many people love fishing. This is probably because it is a cheap hobby and is suitable for all members of the family. It is not very tiring, nor is it repetitive and is relaxing. When you start to feel like you need something completely knew in your life, it is probably time to try out Red River catfishing. It will give you the perfect challenge and experience.

Size and ability to fight characterize these fishes, hence it is not easy to find or catch them. They hold the world record for largest cats and do not have any rival world over. The average size for a normal cat is 15 pounds while the monsters can weigh anything above 40 pounds. The biggest blue ever caught was 143 pounds and 57 inches long.

This river measures around 885km and has North Dakota as its starting point and ends in Winnipeg Lake in Manitoba. It is very common to hear Red River and catfish mentioned in the same breath. This arises because the river is the most famous source of cats. When anything comes up about catfishes, Red River comes into mind and vice versa.

This river has more than 70 dominant species of fish. Among the cats are Channel, Sauger, Mooneye and Northern Pike. Others are Walleye and Bullheads. Baits are used to attract fish to the hook. The best bait to use with cats is chicken livers, shrimps or frogs. Its crucial that the bait used is well prepared and often smelly.

Sinkers are used to ensure that the bait remains at the bottom. The knot is protected from the sinker by the use of a bead or tubing. The swivel is to allow the bait to turn in the direction of the current and also to prevent twists in the line. Use the correct size for the hook depending on the fish to be caught. Along all spots in the river you will find cats. For some they prefer the bottom while others are in ponds. Yet others are found in depressions and holes in this river. Catfishes are best caught between 12 and 6 am.

Catfish feed on a variety of things such as plants, fish, fish eggs, minnows. They also seem to enjoy worms and leeches. Once they are adults, they eat other fish. They can also feed on dead things such as fish. This characteristic is called opportunistic feeding. They eat at night on the bottom of the river or any other water source.

Cats have one of the strongest senses of smell in the animal world. They use whiskers to sense food and swim towards it. They prefer night feeding since most of their prey is asleep. In addition, they can live in water that is polluted or has low oxygen content. They can also taste well. When you place the bait near the whiskers, they are able to sense it.

When going fishing for cats, this is an exceptional and memorable experience. For the family, it is a time to bond and have fun. For corporations its a chance to make an impression to potential clients or investors. For whatever reason you go to fish, hire a boat and equipment instead of carrying your own.
