A Fun Day In L.A. With Your Daughter

By Marquerite Velasquez

Every now and then, it is a fantastic idea to break out of our daily schedule and plan a special day just for you and your daughter. If you live in the Los Angeles area, consider yourself lucky because there are tons of interesting places to visit and enjoy. Here are a few suggestions of where to go and what to do for your Mom-Daughter Day Out.

If your family is all about enjoying the great outdoors, Los Angeles offers plenty of options and heading to the ocean can be a great way to go. In Marina Del Rey, you can rent a kayak or stand-up paddleboards and cruise the harbor or just grab the sand toys and head to Mother's Beach, where you can enjoy some gentle waves. Santa Monica has more than 25 miles of marked paths where you can bike, walk or skate and enjoy some cool people watching. In addition, the Santa Monica Pier has a huge Ferris wheel, a roller coaster and tons of carnival games to enjoy.

Shopping is often a fun choice, but rather than just going to the mall, consider going someplace a bit unique, such as Melrose Avenue. Sandwiched in between upscale shops, you will find several vintage clothing shops, as well as antique shops, quirky gift shops and plenty of cafes for a delicious lunch. For younger girls, consider taking a trip to the American Girl Place at The Grove. Not only can your daughter bring along her doll, the shop has tons of cool displays, a caf where you can enjoy an amazing lunch or afternoon tea, and there is even a salon for the dolls. Consider taking your girl to a nearby salon for a manicure and pedicure while her doll gets her hair done.

Of course you can also opt for a more cultural experience, and Los Angeles offers a myriad of museums and other interesting locations. The Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens in San Marino, for example, offers much to do. The historic library contains more than six million volumes, there are two buildings housing an impressive array of art and the gardens are stunning. There are more than a dozen themed gardens, including the Children's Garden, Japanese Garden and Shakespeare Garden. In addition, you can reserve afternoon tea which includes pots of freshly made tea and a buffet of tiny sandwiches, salads and scones.

Other ideas for cultural outings include a visit to Museum Row, which is located along Wilshire Boulevard between Fairfax and La Brea. Among the offerings is the famous La Brea Tar Pits, although the actual museum is the Page Museum. The county's Museum of Art and the Craft and Folk Art Museums also are located along the way. If your daughter loves cars, you also could visit the Petersen Automotive Museum. In South Los Angeles, Exposition Park also offers some fun cultural experiences, such as a visit to the California Science Center and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.

A day of fun would not be complete without a fantastic dessert, and in Los Angeles, there are few better dessert spots than Yo Ku Mon. This Culver City confectionary features an array of amazing treats, including homemade cookies, gourmet ice cream, shaved ice, and the main specialty - gourmet ice cream sandwiches. You can customize your ice cream sandwiches any way you want. Choose from a variety of different cookies and a dozen flavors of ice cream. The cookies are freshly baked throughout the day right on the premises, and all of the ingredients are of the highest quality.
